"The Line is Busy"
OVER two hundred and sixty-two million telephone
calls were answered last year at Pioneer Exchanges
in the State. It is not surprising that some tele
phones were found to be busy.
If it occurs frequently it means that the party you
wish to reach needs more telephones or if on a party
line a direct line would help matters.
It's a mistake to think that to save herself work the
operator reports the line busy when it is not; it's much
more work for her to notify you that the line is busy than
it is to give you the number. .
Busy men have busy telephones. It is unavoidable
that you may sometimes have to knock more than once
at their telephone door.

Tlie old proverb has it that "beauty
ts skin deep." But the action and
thought of the majority of the pas-
serby shows how valuable an asset is
even this thin silken covering lent
to the fortunate person by a kindly
nature. No wonder so many women
desire beauty above all earthly gifts
so much that they spend their time
dressing and studying the part.
For it is a powerful weapon in
gaining the Joys' and pleasures of life
in winning love ndiniratlon wealth
and rulershlp. The pretty baby is
petted the pretty girl wins the most
attention and the beautiful woman
has the "soft places" of the earth at
her command.
But the great trouble with the gift
of the beauty that it is only skin
deep is that it is a fading and a
passing possession. There conies a
time when the attempt to bold it be
comes all too evident to every eye.
and there the gilt by itself frequent-
ly proves Itself to have been one of
doubtful viUue.
While few care to say anything
against the charm and the value of
the beauty that is SKtn deep there
is good reason from any point of
view in putting a li'.tle more empha-
sis on tlie art of enhancing this outer-
beauty by an inner beauty that may
be called soul deep. Skin deep beau
ty fades as all its possessors sor
rowfully know but the soul deep va
riety grows with the years and has
the immortality of an good qualities.
It renders its possessor lovable in
ways and at times when the outer
beauty can do nothing to attract or
to benefit. And while the outer beau-
ty is something of a chance gift to
the fortunate few the inner beauty
is a possession that nny one may ac-
quire. It may take work but is not
beauty worth the struggle?
Beauty is a great possession but
if one cannot have Doth IdTins of it
why not take what can be had and be
thankful? If the skin deep beauty is
