William Allen White Gives Advice We
All Should Heed
illy Walter S. Gilbert)
The tremendous growth of the mail
tinier business due to a wider terri-
tory being available' on account of
the panels post lias aroused some
of the leading economists of the na-
tion and a storm of protest Is going
tip against what is termed "govern-
ment aid" to the centralization of the
retail business of the country.
William Allen White the greatest
journalist and economist and a man
who lias a large following among the
western farmers is out with a strong
appeal to the fanners of the country
to patronize their homo merchants
it ml begs them not to lend their aid
to the destruction of community life.
lie says significantly "It setnis to
me that a lot of good things In Amer-
ican life will pass if thecountrj town
passes. And it will cutely pass if
centralization of the retail mall order
business in large cities continues. To
destroy the town furnishing the mar-
ket for the farmer mid giving steady
mployment to labor means a reor-
ganization of our commercial social
and Industrial life that will he revolutionary."
Mr. White Is eminently correct
ns he points out "Great cities n;e
heartless" and further when he m' s
"The motto of the mull order house
is 'every man for himself and the
devil take the hlndermost'" and fin-
ally: "That spirit never fails to work
and the weak man the unprotected
man the man alone the man on the
farm when his market is gone when
the spirit of selfishness and greed has
left this country hard and cold and
mean and nelphhorless the fanner
will he (he hindermost."
flow true tins is: Every man or
woman who reads this can recall
some place that "used to he a good
town." which is now nothing. The
merchants were gradually forced out
business because the trade went
somewhere else and that somewhere
else was the mail order house. Then
the country around it began to decay
j farms were either rented out or
i sold or :-iiandoned because the mar-
j ket w as gone.
The whole thing comes back to the
I starting point. Why not work to
I keep your hoys and girls at home?
i Why not build up your home towna
i ana communities? Why not bin Id up
j your ow n neighborhood. Why not
! keep your boys at home instead of
driving them after your money to
the big cities?
I want to repeat: Kvery thousand
dollars of merchandise bought away
from your own town and trading cen-
ter robs somebody of the opportunity
of a good job. It takes one clerk to
every thousand dollars' worth sold
and then there is a balance left for
the home merchant to spend In his
community which also goes toward
keeping up other payrolls right at
home.
Let this fact sink in. If It does the
mail order business is as dead as
Hector so far as this community is
concerned. As Burnitt posted nil
over Ardmore during the Christmas
holidays "Spend your earnings where
you earn your spendings." That's
fine logic. I.et it soak in.

Several of the biographical sketches
of the late Col. Robert T. Van Horn
who introduced ti hill for organization
of a territory called Oklahoma as early
as lSi'.S give misleading information
as to the orgin of the name of the for-
ty sixth state. It is stated that Col.
Van Horn ascribed the proposal of the
name to Col. E. C. lioudinot a Chero-
kee wiio told him that "Oklahoma was
a Creek word meaning Red Man's
Land or Red Land." Col. lioudinot may
I have honestly believed this since ho
and 'did not profess to know either Creek or
Choctaw. Hut he was in error both as
to the language and the meaning. Ok
lahoma comes from two Choctaw
words "okla" meaning a "collection
of people" and "hotna" meaning "red."
The tradition that the name was
tirst suggested by Allen Wright for
some time principal chief of the Choc-
taw nation is corroborated by govern
ment records. Following the civil war
tlie government improved the oppor-
tunity to make new treaties with the
Five Civilized Tribes on the ground
that they had broken the old ones by
joining the confederacy. There were
several tentative proposals. Among
them was a scheme for tlie organiza-
tion of a special Indian territory with
a full complement of officers. This
scheme was drafted nnd agreed to and
although it never became effective it
is found in the compilation of "Indian
Treaties and Laws" made under the
dilution of the senate committee on
Indian affairs some twelve years ago.
Allen Wright was one of the Choctaw
I commissioners in drafting this plan
jand the name Oklahoma was given the
I proposed territory. This was two
! years before Col. Van Horn introduced
j his bill. There has been much talk
! about the old project and the proposed
name. It is not unlikely that Col. I
lioudinot got the mistaken notion that!

Eminent Physicians Failed
In Kidney Trouble
I wish to inform you of the great
benefit 1 have derived from the use of
Sw amp-Root. I had been a sufferer
for more than three years from kid
m y and liver trouble and was almos
constantly treated by tlie most eminent
1 physicians who could only give me
! temporary relief. I could hardly gi
from one room to the other without
jlielp and had been in bed five davs
when I began the use of Swamp-Root
1 Inside of twenty-four hours I could see
some benefit. 1 continued to use
I Swamp-Root until I had used two hot
' ties when I really felt that my old trou
ble was completely cured; and I am
positive that any person suffering with
kidney or liver trouble can be cured
by the use of this preparation. I am 5i
years ot age and in good health. It
has been fourteen years since I had
this trouble and I do not know how
: to express myself as strongly as
desire in favor of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-
I lioot. i am sure that it saved my life
ami that my health is due to this
remedy. I heartily recommend it to
every sufferer of kidney trouble.
