COLORED JANITOR OF BROADWAY
BAPTIST CHURCH REJOICING. IS
CALLING ON THOSE WHO WERE
0 KIND TO HIM.
Jim ileasley the colored janitor of
the llroadway Haptist church who was
seriously burned in the gas explosion
on the afternoon of the L'Ttli of Sep-
tember has recovered sul ticlently to
be up and around. Jim is spending u
few days calling on those who were so
good to him while he was suffering
such severe pain. The railway com-
pany paid him $L'!lnO lor his loss and
lie paid out of that $."ol for medical
'attendance but says that $."jii(l was
j mighty well spent. Ileasley was stand-
j ing in front of the rooming hour and
i the Ho Witt cigar factory when the ex-
! plosion
came. He was about IMO to
:T)il feet from the tank car and tlio
l.add building was between liiui and
the car. lie was talking to a man
named Ianc a restaurant keeper
who was killed and two other men
were near him. Ileasley said he saw
something like a fog first and then
saw a sea of fire and started to get
out of the way but he had gone but
a step when the fire reached him and
the explosion followed
knocking him
! dow n.
A piece of timber struck him
'in the forehead his hand was caught
'lies ays in live electric wires and se-
'verely burned the flames from the gas
burned his body almost all over the
surface but his deepest bum was on
the left leg just above the ankle. One
1 foot was caught under falling walls
but he managed to release it and his
and lit was afterward moved to his
home. He has suffered intensely but is
making a complete recovery. Jim says
some of these fellows that lost their
lives did not get as much as ho did
and he Is awfully well pleased with
the settlement with the Santa Fe. The
women of the Itaptist church were
very kind to him during the time he
was confined to his home and he did
not lack anything that would add to
his comfort. He Is getting around now
to see the white folks who were so
kind to him in the midst of his misfor-
tune. "THE WHITE PEARL"
AT THE PALACE TODAY
Marie Doro the enchanting young
star who through her first appear-
ance in motion pictures in that great
film creation "The Morals of Mar-
cus" endowed the screen with a new
personality again attains a decisive
screen triumph in the Famous leav-
ers Film company's elaborate live-
part photo production "The Whit"
Pearl" by F.dith llarnard He!;. no.
"The White Pearl" is a fanciful ro-
mance of the Orient with which dra-
ma and mystery are absorbingly in-
terwoven. In this unusual slory the
strong attachment between two yon u;
American lovers survives and lr-j
umphs over the machinations of
band of Japanese geisha traders the
influence of a Hindu legend of death
which for a time threatens the life
of the girl and the caprices of (!"
tiny itself. This photoplay will !.?
shewn at the Palace today.

PROMOTER
WHEN ANY PROPOSITION IS PRE-
SENTED YOU TO MAKE MONEY
IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO CONSULT
YOUR BANKER.
I'nless all signs fail the one cer-
tain result of the Kuropean war Is
going to be a general stimulus to
Aim-m-an industry. Our mills ar.
running to full capacity; our crops
are bumper ones; our banks are
gorged with money; our people cm
phned at good wages and coaslantly
shorn i' hours making things for Ku-
rope to cat and wear and shoot. We
shall haw great prosperity.
With prosperity comes the promo
ter 1 1 um to get some ot that pros-
perity without working for it. He
will haw great schemes to make you
land himself) rich. You first then
himsi If lor Ice-versa 1. Fakes by
the thousand will follow the wake of
pro'pi rity nil se king to separate
j nn from our money. The warning
is particularly opportune now: He-
ware the promoter.
If you are offered any scheme to
make money lake It to your banker.
If it offers over six per cent turn II
down on general principles. The pro-
moter finds poor pickings w hen you
tak
his proposition to the boflk
man. Ask the banker: Would you
I go into this with the bank's money?;
' And if he wouldn't don't you. I
i
1 Years ago a western concern or-
'ganized a bank and offered the slock
I broadcast. It was a clever scheme
I a good scheme and a profitable
'one. It had much merit and should
'have come to a belter end. Put it
was loo good and the promoter could
I not stand the prosperity it brought
I him.
I Two hard working miners grit inler-
jcslcd and sought the advice of their
banker lie advised against It. "Hut
lit .as ten per cent and you only
four; and besides they say the stock
I w ill double in value in a year." "Yes
all that may be true" said the bank
cr "but you're not strong enough
to lake the risk and for the possible
profit you can't afford lo chance a
probable loss." They went In and
in less than six months the bank
went broke and the miners nearly
went broke with it they had plung-
ed. Today that stock lies somewhere
In tin boxes mute evidence of what
happens when you go against the
advice of your banker.
A certain steamboat captain never
earned more than a hundred dollars
a month and yet In the course of
twenty-five years he was able to raise
a family dress and educate them
provide a handsome home clear of
debt for them and leave his widow
with enough to support her in com-
fort for life all this on a hundred
a month. lie saved half he earned.
The secret may have lain with the
wife or with him or with both;
but the result was there Just the
same. What this man did you can
do. lie stuck close lo the bank;
bought his home and paid for it by
degrees carried a fair amount of In-
surance. ni'Vi r tried any schemes
and held fast to what he got.
The rVally big things are not "t.awk-j
id about the streets like vegetables.!
Th" big deal: are not for the "dear
public." Henry Ford never offered
his stock broadcast. A certain New-
York undertaker (now bankrupt) did.
Standard Oil never went with hat In
hand asking those who would buy.
Hig things are for the few; little
things for the many.
You worked pretty hard for your
money and it ought to work for you.
not overwork but Just keep comfort-
ably busy. It will work right faith-
fully for compound interest grows
apace; but if you work it too hard
It will like the faithful old horse
keep going for a time but eventually
fall you. Io not try the impossible.
Four per cent with safety is better
than ten per cent with risk. Don't
lose your principal trying to get big
interest. You must sacrifice one of
two things: principal or Income.
Keep safe and your income wi'i be
small but sure; but if you seek large
returns you must of a certainty Jeo-
pardize your principal. Iletter reach
your goal by little jumps that land
