AGRICULTURAL WASTE MANY
DO NOT REGARD FARMING AS
A BUSINESS COST OF SMOKE
IN INDUSTRIAL CITIES.
"Men do i. nt reap in liie spring my
dear
Nor an- granaries filled in May
Save ii In' with a harvest of former
i ai .
Stored up for a rainy day.
"The -iM-iin- will keep their own
true lime.
You can hurry nor furrow nor sod
It's honest labor and steadfast thrift
Thai aioiie are blessed by liod."
--Alfred Austin.
A prominent auricuilurist says that
many American tanners have not got
down t . lariuing as a business ami
that the richness of their soil is the
only tiiii.j that saves them from fail-
ure. Speaking of tin' waste of fodder he
says:
"There are weeds enough in many
corn fields in fatten a carload of sheep
allowing them to eat the down stalks
the lower blades and the low -hanging
ears thai the farmer would hardly
miss.
"We are great wasters of corn fod-
der. All through Ohio anil Indiana
and even in New England one sees
fanner- huv taking down their corn
shucks all weather beaten on the out-
side liu-kiug tlicm out by hand
throwing ihc corn into piles on the
ground. In lie picked up again and
then tying up the fodder leaving much
of the valuable fodder outside to he
weathered before il is led to the slock
"liven greater waste is that in the
corn that is not harvested. Iowa II
liuois eastern Kansas and Nebraska
and soul hern .Minnesota hail about for-
ty million acres of corn last year ol
which probably not more than one
fourth was harvested for the silo or
the shock or for shredding. The rest
goes to waste and it amounts to over
one-third of the feeding value of the
ivhole- crop."
But the city dweller be he business
man or manufacturer can not afford
to point the finger of scorn at the
larmer as a waster because waste is
rampant in the cities likewise.
Lewis li. Theis. who has investi
gated the subject thoroughly is
authority for the statement that un-
necessary coal smoke costs American
industries and American cities a very
great many millions of dollars yearly.
Black smoke consists largely of tin-
consunied coal particles thrown into
the atmosphere by Improper stoking.
Smoke also contains acids of value
w hic h not only are usually wasted but
they are also destructive of everything
l hey touch.
The pollution of our atmosphere
with smoke places a heavy burden up
on us. It greatly increases the death
rate. It lowers our efficiency. L'ngln
eers have estimated that the cost to
the city of Cleveland because of its
s king factories is $0 i.nno a year.
The loss to Chicago is estimated at
17 ihio.ooo a year. The people of
Pittsburgh suffer an annual loss of
JliiuiiO.OftO .through smoke. The an
nual bill on account of smoking fac
tory chimneys is recl'oned ut $5no-
Onii.uiiO. One Pittsburgh manufacturing com
pany alone has effected a saving of
.file nut) a year through the abolition
of smoke in ils chimneys by means of
double steam pressure and mechanical
stokers.
In -filiation of smoke consuming ma-
chinery and proper stoking engineers
claim will prevent much of the loss
r.ow -altered from this source.
We are horrified by the stupendous
wa-le being wrought by the destruc-
tive forces of war on the oilier side of
the globe. Let us not overlook the
fad that individually and collectively
we Americans are responsible for an
aggregate of waste which is almost
if not quite as stupendous and the fact
that history's most devastating war is
now in progress should impel us to
wage unremitting war on waste of all
kinds in our own country.
Best Thing for a Bilious Attack
"On Account of my confinement in
the printing office I have for years
been a chronic sufferer from indiges-

relief from any other treatment I took
three of Chamberlain's Tablets and
the next dav I felt like a new man."
