ELECTED ATTORNEY GENERAL
UN 1907 AND REj-ELECTED IN
1910 BY INCREASED MAJORITY
MAN OF THE HOUR.
Charles West Is a Georgian born In
Savannah In 1872.
He was educated In Maryland
schools graduating with the degree
of A. If. from Johns Hopkins univer-
sity In 1891.
After tutoring during his residence
in Johns Hopkins and teaching for a
year in iBultimore City College he
spent two terms in study at the Uni-
versity of TJelpsig Germany.
On his return from Germany he
came west settling in Kingfisher
Oklahoma In 1891. He was the editor
of the Kingfisher Times for several
months and In September was ap
pointed deputy clerk of the district
court by J. C. McClelland which posi-
tion he held for four years.
In 1S98 he began tho" practice of
law at Pond Creek but upon the
opening of the Spanish war volun-
teered as a private. He was honor
ably discharged In February 1899
after having- been promoted to cor
poral and sergeant.
After his return to Oklahoma he
enlisted in the National Guard being
promoted from time to time through
the various ranks to lieutenant-colo
nel. This position he resigned in
1910 because of pressure of his duties
as attorney general.
In 1899 he began the practice of
law in Enid and during the next
eight years built a largo practice.
During the latter part of this period
he first came Into state prominence
by assuming direction of an attack
already under way upon a member
or the supreme court of Oklahoma
Territory forcing the judge to taka
refuge behind the statute of limita-
tions and preventing his reappoint-
ment; and by later being employed
by the republican governor of the ter-
ritory to conduct Important litigation
against the railroads in connection
with various freight rales. During
this same period he began tho study
of the problems of railway rate regu-
lation and control of corporations
which later made him a national fig-
ure and caused his election as presi-
dent of the Association of Attorneys
General for the purpose of guiding
the litigation of all the western states
in connection with the two-cent fare.
In 1907 he was elected attorney gen-
eral of Oklahoma and was re-elected
in 1910. He Is now a candidate for
the democratic nomination for gover
nor -upon -his record in that office. J
He was first elected by a vote of
!!S000 elected the second time by a
vote of 10000. His Initiative poll-
receiving their chief support from
increased vote every Umo he has
gone before the people. No man In
the stato has beaten this record If
West's vote tay3 with him In this
election (nnd we nelleve it will) he
has enough votes to elect him.
His splendid work In behalf of
the oil producers of this county should
give him tho entire vote of Carter
county.

CLARES AND LETS CAT OUT
OF THE BAG TELLING WHY
SOME PAPERS SUPPORT HIM.
Oklahoma City July 2:'. It is now
openly charged that Williams and
Robertson are seeking tho nomina
tion for governor In the interest of
gigantic machines and that they are
receiving their chief support from
such machines. Tho cat is out of tiie
bag and the latest developments are
very interesting iu view of the fact
that both Williams and Robertson
with a "holier-than-thou" air have
all during the campaign been pro-
claiming to the people that they are
not running in the interests of any
machines and that they are against
the machines In politics.
There is a current rumor among
prominent newspaper men that the
reason certain county seat papers aro
supporting Williams is due to the
following and clearly discloses Wil
liams' machine.
Prior to the announcement of Judge
Williams for governor George Smith
editor of the Chandler Tribune be
came interested in what is now known
as tho Consolidated 1'rlnting com
pany of Oklahoma City. Mr. Smith
made a personal visit to the county
seat towns of Oklahoma and submit
ted the proposition to the county seat
newspapers In substance as follows
"Several of tho smaller printing
concerns of Oklahoma City are con-
solidating under the name of Consoli
dated Printing company of Oklahoma
City. If you will use your influence
with your county commissioners and
have all the work that you aro un
able to do sent to our company we
will allow you a commission of twen
ty per cent upon all orders received
by ius from your commissioners; this
twenty per cent commission to be ap
plied on stock that jou may take in
I he Consolidated Printing company to
the amount of $r00 or $1000.'
A number of county seat newspaper
men seeing an opportunity to secur
stock in the Consolidated Printing
company without the investuui.t ol
any cash "fell" for the proposiiioi
and agreed to take all the way from
$"00 to $1000 in stock.
Within the next few days William
announced for governor and imm
iliately following the announcemen
was made that G ?orgo Smith of Chan
dlcr would be made one of .ludi

then that Mr. Smith sought a m con
