encouraged and honored whenever
they respond to the call of public

CATTLE DISEASE

LIVE STOCK MEN SAY EPIDEMIC
IS BEING IMPORTED FROM AR-
GENTINA. Kansas City July 7. -Crave danger
--lean cattle from the dreaded
too ; h disease or Argentina
live stock c.nm'ssion men here say
will follow the importation of mlil
ions of bushels of South American
corn let In by free trade.
The corn shipments from the Ar-
gentlne Republic now aggregate I-
500000 bushels a week whereas for
merly it was kept out by a tariff of
10 cents a bushel. The greater por
tion comes from the central and
southern end of the republic where
cattle are now dying by thousands
It is loaded in freight cars in which
cattle are also shipped and taken to
Buenos Aires where it is loaded upon
steamers bound for the United
States.
In the South American countries
grain Is not handled loose as In the
United States. It is put into sacks
which are easier to transport be
cause they can be bundled into cattle
cars piled on flat cars or motoi
trucks. The spread of the foot and
mouth disease throughout Argentina
Paraguay Urtig'-iay and southern Pra
zi'. was declared by veterinarians in
those countries to have been due to
eerms retained by the. sacks and
the corn itself.
Disease Is Loathsome.
The foot and mouth disease is
fungus growth that is quickly trans
milled from feeding troughs or drink
ing tanks or through the air. Jt is
virulent and loa'.hsome. The extent
to which it has swept Argentina
commission men pointed out yester
day. Is illustrated by the fate of
llama which the mayor of Duenos
Aires sent to William J. Bryan a
few months ago. Although it is to
be assumed that every precaution was
adopted to keep the animal in a heal
thv condition when the llama arrived
in sr York it was diseased ar.d
could not be landed.
"The danger of a ravaging pest. I
ence breaking out among American
emtio is v 'ry great' a live stock
commission man said yesterday ""in
ih pre.fnt depleted condition of our
Ik i ds it vould amount to a national
riliuiiilv. Climatic conditions in the
Lnited States are not dissimilar to
those of Argentina as is indicated
by tho fact that Argentina farmers
v.. i jo nrnriyeH- the same crops of
potatoes corn oats barley and wheat.
' Germs Easily Scattered.
"The imported corn is ground up
into speeds upon its arrival in the
r-nnnirv nnd sent everywhere .no
wonder the foot and mouth disease
lias broken out. and severe cases
have been frequent since the tariff
on Argentina corn was taken oft by
the present administration.
Another effect of free trade on
cattle and hogs vas testified to by
several commission men at the Live
Stock Exchange building yesterday.
They declared IhU the present prices
of hogs and cattlj are much less than
thov should be lecause of the influx
cf foreign meaf.
"The current price of feed justified

HARD TIME "GETTING BY."
Seme of tie Ups and Downs of Fred
Haynie What Voters Think.
In the race for county offices now
on the name of Fred Haynie the
district clerk is called almost as
often as tho office of sheriff la men-
tioned and in all counties the sher
iff's office carrlea with' it a great
deal of Interest.
Mr. Haynie has .done his work so
well and has so many friends through-
out the county who are interested
in his success that they keep his
name before the voters. Dave Row
land In Cooke county served that
county in one of the offices for twen
ty years or more and was never de-
feated. He was in office at the time
his death occurred. Jlany Carter
county people feel that if Fred Hay-
nip keeps up his present record he
will be an officer of this county" aa
long as he deiirs to hold it.
Jlr. Haynie was working on only
a small salary as a delivery boy in
Ardmore when a team ran away with
him breaking hl3 leg. He was In
the hospital Joe ajmos a year and
lost one leg and came very near los-
ing his life. Ho has a wife and sev-
eral children and no man in Carter
county ever had a harder time try-
ing in an honest way to "get by."
His friends have been good to him
and they are being repaid now in
seeing him a useful straightforward
honest workman who does all his
work in tho best manner possible
and who when he was checked up
by the stat auditor had hlaac-.
counts in first-class shape.
