vii'h the ece;.tivn of the mineral
A.At-r the lands Mhy-h is reserved.
The jititdic domain w ith the exeep-
t.on of mineral and timber lands in
the far west is about all taken up by
settler? and the treat d"mar.d for
any land cominp on the market open
to .settlement or for sale at a low
price a'tracts many more people than
can ; ossiidy secure a part of it and
:t is expected that there will be a
-treat rush for the lands to he s'.ld
hers.
The prea: demand was evidenced
by the last t-ale of unallotted Indian
lands made here in the spring of the
present year. Every acre offered was
sold and this was remnants of land
twice or three times picked over.
The timber lands belonging to the
early in January 1014. Of this there Is
l.lt'i'.OiiO acres on which there are 1-
ii4::.&.j7.0'0 feet of pine and 141:!0'J-
) of hardwood timber.
To Be Sold Together.
Of this the land and timber will be
sold together. Any of it classed as
agriculcural lands will be sold in
tracts of not to exceed ICO acres and
the timber in tracts of not to exceed
'i40 acres. All of this timber land
was divided into but few tracts mak-
ing it possible for only large and
we althy corporations to bid on it. Sen-
ator Kobert L. Owen so bitterly op-
posed this that the law was amended
at the last session of congress and
the provision made that it should be
offered in small tracts to prevent the
lumber trust coming into possession
of all this valuable timber.
Most of the timber and the surface
of the segregated lands to be sold is
In the Choctaw nation. The timber lies
in Carter Pontotoc Murray Jeffer-
son and Johnston counties while the
segregrated coal and asphalt lands
are in Haskell. Le Flore Latimer
Pittsburg Atoka Coal and Pushma-
taha counties. Of all the timber and
segregated lands the Choctaw tribe
owns three-four ths anil the Chickasaw
tribe one-fourth. The terms of sab'
of the timber lands are one-fourth
cash at time of sale and the balance
in one two and three years.
Interest in Surface Lands.
Interest her.- centers in the sale of
the surface of the coal lands McAles-
tor being the center of the coal dis-
trict of the eastern part of the state
and it has been from this city that
the tight before congress and the de-
partment of the interior has been
made. The eastern part of this state
what was formerly old Indian terri-
tory has been kept behind the west-
ern part or old Oklahoma territory
bv reason of these large holdings by
the Indians of lands not subject to
taxation. This condition has kept back
the people in the acquirement of roads
bridges schools and has left Idle
lands that would make as fine farms
as are to be found in the United
States.
John G. Joyce surveyor in thief
came here in March. BM2 and put
many crews in the field surveying and
platting the surface of the coal lands
Appraisers were appointed at that
time and worked for many months
when there came a delay the apprais-
ers resigned ami the work stop ed.
After the law was amended. Mr. Joyce
returned to the work and new apprais-
ers were appointed.
These are Henry M. Tidwell of Mus-
kogee chairman; Roy J. Allen of Dun.
can am! Henry I. Kidd of Poteau.
They have followed the surveyors in
their work of appraisement and have
completed Le Flore and Latimer coun-
ties. The law provides that the ap-
praisement shall be completed by De-
cember 1. B'Bl. Mr. Joyce has practi-
callv completed the survey.
Will Be 4000 Farms.
Of the segregated surface to be
sold there are 4aS.orto acres at pres-
ent but after deducting for townsites
cemeteries school lots and other
tracts there will 1 about 4"0.(m0
acres to be offered for sale. There
will be approximately 4.000 fine farms.
In addition to this tracts near the
townsites are being divided into five
and ten acre lots and will be offered
for track patches and orchards. Thl
land and will be on the market early
