from the prejudiced ma of the

only object and aim wa* to take the
'aw in la own bands, and proceed
to pacish -.he offenders. IThat does
the order i!Ud for? Let'* see.
"We reierently acknowledge the

and we shall faithfull devote our-

able clanishne^s that the life and
livirg of each may be a constant

This certainly doea not sound like
barbarism; lawless ti cm or *nti-

is true that this great organization

cross, symbol of the purest and
moat loyal patriotism, as their bea-
con, the Ku Klug rode through the
darkness ot Reconstruction'! night;
they dispelled the dense darkness of
that frightful nlgbt; and at the ris-
ing of the sun of a glorious day,
they saw the shades of that awful
night receding. Klght bad been by
them established over might. The
voice of music was again heard in
the land; the r purpose and mission
was ended; they laid aside their
spotless robes, and the greatest or-
der of chivalry In all history dis-
banded.
Today the order knows no north
and no aouth, but one people under
one flag working for the elevation
of mankind, the purity of womin-
bood; a free press, free speech and
free schools. It appeals to 100 per
cent Americans and stand« ready to
welcome them in 'ts midst.
1 am told by those who know, that
the order does not tolerate lawlesa-
ness In any form, but'stands ready
at all time., to assist in the enforce
ment of our laws and the suppres-

of their workings and prefer to show
by their acta and deeds the real pur-
propbet.
But we eali to mind that la 131!

foresighted men were hooted and
