CHILDREN
FIGHT RACK
The little boys of the city and some
of the girls who heretofore have <
ducted "pop" stands during the hot
months on their respective corners In
the city are bitterly opposed to any
legislation prohibiting same. Indeed
tli. y have raised quite a clamor against
J. H. Johnston, former councilman, for
advocating same.
Mr. Johnston pi -ike at length on the
subject In front of the council at the
last meeting. He gave as his direct
reason for removing the stands wa
that they were a nuisance. In his re-
marks he said: "Hoys and girls con
gregate at these places and we ar
solicited to buy and many times are put
In embarrassing positions."
The council and mayor listened pa
tlently to his talk but gave no evidence
of passing an ordinance governing
pop stands. And It does not appear to
be the Intention of the present <
government to molest the little ones
their efforts to secure spending
oney.
Mr. Johnston may be sincere In his
intention and may be promoting a
good cause but at the same time it
looks like a man of his position would
have better business to attend to than
trying to run the children and the pop
bottles out of existence.
If the youthful dispensers in the rr
freshment line composed as dangerous

meet the public gaze in a city of this
size, we would say, "whoop er up John-

RELEASED
The man who caused so much com-
motion and excitement the latter part
of last week In the vicinity of Sliartel
and Eighth, and thought by the resl-
lents of that neighborhood to be de-
mented, has been released.
He gave his name as William Stod-
iard. According to the prevailing
stories be committed no serious of-
fense more than running up and down
the street acting very much like an
insane person. His capers are said to
have driven women frantic In that
ighborhood. After trying to enter
several houses a patrol wagon was
ailed and Stoddard was taken In
harge by the police.
It was thought at the time that Stod-
dard was overloaded with Intoxicat-
ing liquors and not Insane as charged.
It has since been decided so at least
after a thorough examination.
