RETURN OF TOW1M MALL
The old towu hall which pioneer
Americans set In every township
center was a good deal more than
A civic building, lu It the young
people played “Ten Nlghta in a
Bar Room." and the lodge held It*
annual "oy*ter supper." And the
women met for the quilting bee, and
old and young gathered for a “spell
down." It was a place for all aocial
gatherings which were too large for
a school house and not adapted to
a church.
The building of great municipal
balls, as recently taken up is re-
garded a* a purely modern inspir-
ation. Kansas Cl|y ha* one, and
Cleveland proposes to build one cost-
ing f2,800,000 If bonding the *am>-
la voted at the next election. Hut
After all there la nothing new in the
municipal hall Idea except its many
Improved feature* for promoting
aome very old aocial uses.
There Is acting, for Instance. To
give a play is one of the oldest of
aocial Inclinations. Just now a
craze for dranitlc art Is sweeping
from the kindergarten to the col-
lage. And a playhouse appears to b*
one of the most desirable features
of any municipal ball.
Such a municipal theatre ha* been
conducted In Northampton. Mas*
for the past four year*. Its direc-
tor. Miss Jessie Donstelle, says:
“My dream Is of a municipal play-
house which would Include theatre,
howling alley, pool room, gyuina
alum, swimming tank, library and a
rest room. If the husband didn't
care to see the play he could let
his wife go while he amused him
aelf down statra. And the rest room
would be only for thoae who de
aired at any time during the day or
evening a period of absolute quiet.
Probably public halls in big and
little towns will soon be looked up-
on aa a municipal necessity. Hut if
they are even to serve any com
munlty completely they must em
body ample opportunities for the
same social activities which were
once offered by the primitive town
‘ hall.

Nobody Can Tell When You Darken

of the finest buildings in the state.
We call them Masonic Temple*. In

hour I dare say if you were sitting |
in the auditorium in Guthrie your
eyes would Is* fixed on that great
scenic picture, which so mauy of
you saw last January meeting and
set throughout with dampened eyes
the “Crucifixion.’’
These temples we call our home,
for home It Is; here we all meet
as a big family, and I look for-
ward to those meetings, as a min
