BAD YEAR FOR THE WORLD.
Mme. De The be i Can See Only
Duster for the Future.
Mme. de Thebes, of I'arLs, "the
witch of the Etoile (Quarter." the
world s greatest s<" r< >«. has is-
sued her forecast for 1912. The
famous pythoness to whom near-
ly every well known ntan in
France has journeyid "to hav
their fortunes told." predicts
that the very "devil" will he
to pay all over the world.
Next y< ar is to be the "Black
Year," nations will be upheaved;
a great European war is to be
fought; the high cost of living
is to go higher; Paris probably
will topple into runs: babies
won t haw --nough milk; Kaiser
Wilhelm of Germany will lose
his crown, etc.
You, perhaps, laugh at "for-
tune tellers." Mile. Lamtelme,
the beautiful French actress, felt
that way about it, and when
.Mine, de Thelws told her "to
beware of water," she only smil-
ed, Mile. Lantelme was drown-
ed off her house bo ait on the
Rhine last summer.
Anyway, Mme. de Thebes's
"prophecies" ar ■ strangely in
teresting. Even if she be not in-
spired, the fact remains that
wherever she gets her informa-
tion. however it is that she tears
aside the curtains for her ]>eek
into the future, she often hits
the bull's-eye. If she isn't
real prophetess she s a corking
good guesscr. She says, in part:
"Last year I called 'the twi-
light year:' next year—as night
succeeds the twilight—will be
the 'Black Year.' But there will
be streaks of light. Not a sing-
le star will rise over Paris. All
will be dark, save now and tlvcn
vivid streaks of lightning will
cut the shadows preceding the
resounding booms of thunder.
"Mercury and Mars will dom-
inate the heavens. * * * Mm
of affairs, diplomats, will try
their ordinary affairs, but they
will have to leave the last word
to the military force and can
non will speak when the l>u«i
in ss men and diplomats get mud-
dled.
"For France everything points
to war, but I believe thr# will
not come before the latter part
of the year. Failing of war in
1912, 1913 will b the liurt year
of grace; then it will 1* inevi-
table. Between now and then
the chances of j> ace and war
are about equal. The cataclysm
foreseen is so gnat, so wide-
spread, that it is dangerous evn
to speak of it lent it be precipi-
tated. Not only will it turn Eu-J
rope upside down, but other con-
tinents as well, notably Alia. '
We will be forewarned by a triml- I
ling of the >-&rth and we shall j
know that the end of our troub-
les is in sight when moat of the
necessities of life are wanting: j
especially will milk b^ scarce.
"A hard win'<r is ah-ad, &
sullen springtime, a heavy wum- j
mer and a bitter fall.''
Blood and fire will surround
France throughout the year, *e- |
cording to the future rad-r.
Br-st. Toulon and Paris will be
especially curs d. Paris will
have epidemics, floods, attempts
against the live of well known
people, and "if thos - men whose
intentions are good enough can-
not get together. Paris will U-
in ruins."
This is lakin to mean that
s nee the government lias done
little toward d epen ng the bed
of the Seine, the floods Mme. De
Thebes foret'-lls, will k-ave Par.s
in a sad state.
There is to be an uprising of
some nature or ot.h r in Paris,
the particular quart rs not being
indicated by Mme. de Thebes.
"There will be," she says, "nu-
merous sudden deaths, as if a
volcano suddenly opened. But
in the midst of this torment Par-
Is will not interrupt the tr nd of
her daily life. It will continue
to have its full share of crim s
of passion, its society dramas
and singular adventures. • •
I see a famous stage beauty, at
a boulevard theatre, who wiJ kill
herself after she has killed sonu -
one."
Spam will have lively du.ngs;
there will be plots and complo's.
but Alfonso will save his crown.
The Emperor William of Germ-
any will not be «o lucky, it
would seem.
"There will be across the
Rhine no dominat ng lloh nzol-
lern nor any other Prussian; tha
is what lierlin will get for h'-r
violences and political barbar-
isms. I have said, and I repeat,
that the days of the emp ror ar-
numbered and after him a 1 will
change in Germany. I sp> ak of
his reign, not of his life."
England has a bad destiny in
store for her; there are to be
deaths and fires. But it :a the
same everywhere; it will be the
"Black Year."
The United States is no exc-p-
tiini to the rule. The present
government, it seems, wi 1 be
knocked down and rolled in the
dust of defeat. A new set will
take up the reins.
