firemen on twenty-two ships of the
Ward line was ordered to begin at noon
Thursday by H. P. Griffin, fourth vice
president of the Atlantic Coast Seamen's
union, unless the officials of the line
agreed to the union's demands to dis-
continue the use of the "boarding house
master and crimp" system. The strike
was to bo inaugurated by more than a
hundred men, firemen, stewards, cooks
and seanien on the Espernnza, scheduled
to leave pier Xo. 13, In the East river,
at noon today for Havana, Cuba. The
officials of the company claimed that
the ship was fully manned and would sail
on time.
Boston. July 6.—A big marine firemen's
strike that may tie up the Metropolitan
line, the Eastern line, the Un 'ed Fruit
line and the coal boats running out of
this port Is threatened by the Marine
Firemen's union of Boston. Twelve men

Havana. July It Is semi-offlclally
reported that John B. Jackson, American
minister to Cuba, has been recalled. It
is also rumored that Minister Leach of
England will not return to Cuba, being
persona non grata with the government
as the result of his activity in behalf of

in the case of Jasper Slpes, trustee of
