death occurred today of John Firth,
near Venus, aged i>7, a native of
Sunderland. England, who possessed
a medal, personally presented to him
by Kniperior Louis Napoleon ol' France
for braverry in going alone as a vol- j
unteer in an open boat and saving the
livfs of a regular life-saving crew of
France who had themselves been
swamped in trying to save the crew
of a wrecked vessel, lie followed the
sea many years and was ship-car-
penter on the Orr at Eastern when the
first Atlantic cable was laid from that
vessel, lie located in Canada. :!« years
ago, marrying Miss Elanor l'a.vne at
OriUa, Ontario, but a number of years j
ago homesteaded a claim in Woodward
county. He is survived by a widow j
and six children.

crowd witnessed the performance of j
the "Moonshiners Daughter" by thej
Curtis Comedy Co.. No. 1. This com-j
pany is an aggregation of thesplans j
and every play presented by them j
thus far has received the praise and
commendation of the press and public.
At the play last nigjht the audience
seemed to fa if right in the spirit with
the pe rformance and at eac h dramatic
situation the applause was general.
Miss Valley as Daisy, the moonshin-
ers ward portrayed her character ad-
mirably well and had the sympathy of
the auuience.
Miss Anderson as Tatters was quite
I natural as a moonshiners illiterate
I child. Mr. Hardway as Ed the hero,
Mr. Meyer as Tom Logan in fact each
number of the company deserved end
it for the play pleased the audience
and as the curtain fell 011 the last act
the crowd left the building feeling
that they had spent a very enjoyable
evening. The specialties were well
received. Tonight the 4 act pnstorial
drama "Driven From Home." New
specialties.
Mrs. S. S. Mendenhall was hostess
to the afternoon Whist club yester-
day afternoon at her home 011 Elm.
The afternoon was devoted to the club
game. The highest scores being made
by Mrs. Cronin and Mrs. Phil Lehnard.
A delicious two course luncheon was
served. The ladies present were Mes-
damcs. Mason, Rice, Hitt, Clark, Crow-
nes. Jennings. Noble, Smith, Curtis.

I About twenty young ladies gave a
novelty shower last night in honor of
Miss Stivers at the home of the Misses
Cantrell 011 North Poplar. The even-
ing was delightfully spent in music
and chat. Light refreshments were
served at the ( lose. Miss Stivers was
the recipient of many beautiful and
useful gifts.
