CONVICTED OF LAXD FRAUDS
Xerro Lawyer Who Has Given Wes.
tern Oklahoma Authorities
Much Trouble
Cherokee, Okla., April 28.—Peter
Tyler a negro lawyer, was sentenced
by Judge Bailey to serve a term of
three years In the penitentiary for for-
gery connected with land fraud.
Tyler has given the civil authori-
ties in western Oklahoma more
trouble the past three years than any
other man in this section of the state.
It is alleged that he has been UBed as
the tool of unprincipled white men in
obtaining false deeds to lands from ig-
norant old colored people. He was in
dieted six times by a recent grand
Jury for connection with these frauds
He is the same negro who was sen-
tenced to serve a term in the peni-
tentiary on the charge of defrauding
an old negro woman out of a valuable
corner lot in the city of Knid. He ob-
tained a hearing for a new trial.
Tyler is the negro who obtained
false affidavits against Ex-Goternor
Ferguson which were used by Fulton's
managers during the campaign in the
Second congressional district in 1907.
The judge in sentencing Tyler spoke
in language that could not be misun-
derstood, of conditions existing in this
rounty where it is alleged that a num-
ber of people are involved in whole-
sale land frauds and that it is the duty
of the prosecuting attorney and the
people of Blaine couny in general to
Bee that these land grafters get the
■full penalty of the law. Interesting
developments are further expected.
Move and Still Legal
Guthrie, Okla., April 28.—In an
opinion to the Wyneewood New Era
in regard to the necessary status of a
newspaper tor legal publications, At-
torney General West holds that a pa-
per may move from one place to an-
other in the county without breaking
the continuity of its regular issues,
but if it moves from one county to
another It is not eligible until it ac-
quires a general circulation in that
county and has been published there
for flfty-two consecutive weeks.
In another opinion on the same sub
ject to the editor of the Afton Ameri-
can. the same requirements of tifty-
two weeks' publication is referred to,
with the further explanation that an
exception is made when there has
been no paper published in the county
for the period required by law.
