The Best Men Carry Howard Watches
And the Rest Set Their Watches by the Howard
Watches That the Best Men Carry
Time has always been precious to the best men. All we
have in the world "is time and your success or failure de-
pends upon the way you make use of it. The attention
(time) required by your watch to keep it at its best is as im-
portant to the man of punctuality, reliability and precision
as is the watch itself. To the man of affairs it is not always
possible to wind his watch at just the proper time. If he
misses the winding time by four or six or eight or twelve or
sixteen hours it makes 110 difference in the performance of a
tine Howard. We would like to talk to you in person about
this watch and give you our best prices. Call and see us.

ANNUAL REPORT
Ot County Schools by Superintendent
Christian Shows Them to be
in Fine Condition.
Superintendent Christian of
the county schools has just com-
pleted his first annual report to
State Superintendent Cameron.
The report is full of interesting
data concerning the schools ot
the county since statehood. The
report is for the school year end-
ing June 30th.
There arc 87 school districts in
the county. Three of the dis-
tricts arc composed of cities of
the first class, and seven are in-
corporated towns. There are 14
separate schools for colored
children in addition to the white
schools. There are 12,474 school
children in the county divided as
follows: white males 5,793, white
females 5,273, total white pupils
11,0(56; colored males 719, col-
ored females 689, total colored
schoolchildren 1,408. In the 87
districts 82 schools have been
established. The value of the
school property, buildings and
furniture is $325,000. The money
apportioned by the state last
June was $6,068, ot which amout
$4,576 was on hand June 30th.
In the city, county, and gov-
ernment schools there are em-
ployed 120 teachers, a large
number more being employed by
subscription.
A four weeks institute was
held in which six counties partic-
ipated. In the institute were
327 teachers. A total of 109
certificates were issued as fol-
lows: First grade 13; Second
grade 47; Third grade 49. The
receipts ot the institute were
$941, expenditures $698.15,
leaving a balance ot $242.85,
which will be disbursed among
the six counties.
There are 3,500 books in the
school libraries of the county, the
same being valued at $2,000.
These libraries are located in the
schools ot McAlester and Harts
home.
In a supplementary report is-
sued by Prof. Christian it is
shown that there are seven in
corporated towns in the county:
Canadian, Haileyville, Kiowa,
Quinton, Alderson, Indianola,
and Crowder City; three cities of
the first class: McAlester, Harts-
horne, and Krebs; and three
towns not incorporated: Bache,
Dow, and Adamson. All have
graded schools. Hartshorne, Al-
derson, and McAlester have col-
ored graded schools.
In July the state made another
apportionment, and the sum ot
$1,820.40 went to Pittsburg
county schools. In addition,
county funds from fines amount-
ing to $849.52 went into school
treasury. Superintendent Chris-
tian has organized schools wher-
ever a school house could be
found in the district. In a few
of the districts there are no
schools.
Pittsburg county stands first
in school population in the east-
ern part of the state. There are
few counties which have more
incorporated towns. Pittsburg
county is the banner school
county ot the state, and the
first annual report is highly
gratifying to those interested in
the progress of school work.

McAlester This Week -Four From
Here Taking the Work.
A representative of the St
Louis Republic is in McAlester
this week taking a straw vote
011 the presidential election. A
number of the big dailies have
divided the country into dis-
tricts, and are canvassing all the
states. Each paper takes a dis
triet, and when thev have fin-
ished they will compare their
notes, and they hope to have as
difinite knowledge ot the situa-
tion as is possible with this kind
of a scheme.
The fall reunion ot Scottish
Kite Masons of the Valley of
McAlester, Orient of Oklahoma,
is in session this week at the
Masonic Temple at McAlester,
ind a large number of members
from all over the state are in at-
tendance. On Monday night,
the Master Mason degree was
conferred upon a large class, and
continuing through Tuesday,
Wednesday, and today, the lodge
will be in session, and will ter-

this city arc taking the work
during this session: Messrs. P.P.
Recce, M. M. Bradford, IJ. C.
Campbell, and Thomas Dixon.
Was Given a Surprise.
Mr. A. 0. Cochran was ten-
dered a surprise 011 last Thurs-
day evening by the members of
his Sunday school class. He
was called over from McAlester
supposedly on a business matter,
but when lie reached his room at
the home of W. A. Polk, he was
greeted by about twenty young
people who had planned a social
for him. Various kinds of amuse-
ments were furnished, and at the
proper hour dainty refreshments
were served. The time was much
enjoyed by all present.
Governor Haskell will speak in
McAlester on the evening ot
October 28, and the Bryan-Kern
club of that city is making
preparations to give him a roy-
al reception.
