To Aid in Raising McKinloy
Memorial Fund Lesson
of Patriotism.
Chandler, O. T.. Feb. 28, 1902.
1 Ion. E. B. Shotwell,
County Supt.of Public 1 nstruction.
Lincoln county.
Dear Sir: Having been designated
member of the McKlnley Memorial
association for Lincoln county, 1
have been asked to raise in my own
way and forward that portion of the
fund.-; which this county feels to be its
part at as early a date as practicable
1 have been in doubt as to the best
means of raising the same; however,
in accordance with the request, and
j having in view not only the substan-
tial part which this county should
contribute towards the monument to
perpetuate the memory of our mar-
tyred president, but, as well, the man-
ner in which the lesson of patriotism
and civic virtues (which after all is
I the only object of the monument)
might make its most vivid and lasting
I impression upon the p:op1e of this
I county, I have concluded as follows:
I That if the public schools of our
| county can become interested in the
, matter, the objects of the association
' will have been l>est subserved. Be-
1 lieving patriotism, love of country
and its institutions and its laws to be
elementary in the education of our
| youth, and kuowing the high value
, you set upon these qualities both as a
citizen and as an educator, I have the
honor to request your co-operation:
to the end that every school district
! in Lincoln county may give something
1 towards the erection of this monument,
j and in so'doing generate and nourish
in the hearts of the youth of Lincoln
! county the growing bulwarks of the
future state) those noble qualities of
manhood and citizenship more en-
during than columns of marble or
tablets of bronze
I hope you may see lit to indorse
the sentiments herein and ask the
teacher or board of each district to
carry out in the way deemed l>est s-ewne
plan for contribution and to forward
the same to me with the names and
number of district, and 1 will see that
each gets its proper share of credit in
jiiy report.
