The populist national committee has

February 19, by Chairman Butler, tor
the purpose ot llxing the time and place
of holding tbu national eonvcnti"i.
I!y a vote of 211H to 50 the house adop-
ted the majority report of the committee
recommending the exclusion of 15ng-
liim II. Roberts, representative-elect
from Utah, from a sest in the house.
The minority report of the committee
■recommended the admission of Robert*
upon his credentials and his expulsion
afterwards, which would require ■ two-
thirds vote. It is admitted by many of
l hose who voted for the majority report
that a dangerous precedent has been es-
tablished, and Unit hereafter a tare ma-
jority of tho house can for any reason or
o i any pretense prevent a member from
taking his seat, but they claim that a
tiare majority will never do it except in
a lliigrmit case like that ol itoberts.

Birthday Party
On last Friday Hie 28th, the many
friends of the Shaw family assembled
once more under "the old roof lice —-
Tins time the happy surprise was in
honor of theli daughter, Mrs. Will
Shaw. It being her birthday. While
Mr. aud Mrs. Prank Shaw are noted for
th-ir hospitality, they surpassed them-
selves on this occasion. To attempt to
describe the dinner would result in fail-
ure, us any of us who were fortunate
enough to be seated around the festal
board can testify. SuiUce it to say the
table was daintily arranged and fairly
groaned beneath its weight of K3 d
tilings. After noon music was tendered
and wo departed lo our homes wishing
her birthday came once a week. Home
of the friends left their good wishes in
substantial form as Mrs. Shaw received
several presents. A. l'riend.

Otto Kleemann, who lives on Bel-

his household, unmindful of t o fact
that his dog held the opinion t t his
master should ha-ve no other pe-s be-

the dejected semblance of a dog. The

sider The enemy had more teeth tlnin
a battalion of bull terriers, and all of
them were newly sharpened. He was no
quitter, however, and with rising an-
ger he renewed the attack. This time
his opponent came down, landing on
him heavily, and with the touch of a
barb-wire fence. The two rolled over
and over in a death embra"\ and th
cactus was finally vanquished, torn in-
to shreds and scattered about the room.
But it was a costly victory. The con-

live to fight another day, but it will
not be with a cactus.-Oregonian.
