Askins speaks to local clubs I State School Board
about tourism in Oklahoma meets at local school

Sapulpa held its third quarter
Joint Civic Luncheon
Thursday at Freddie s Steak
House. Debbie Moss opened
the luncheon by leading the
Pledge of Allegiance before
Don Lawrence gave the prayer.
All attending enjoyed a great
lunch before Ted Fisher gave
the introduction and
announced the guest speaker as
Lieutenant Governor Jari
Askins.
A native of Duncan. Askins
was sworn in as the 15th
Lieutenant Governor in 2007
and is the first Democratic
woman to hold the position
She has the rare distinction of
being involved in public serv-
ice in all three branches of
state government
She served as the special dis-
trict judge of Stephens County
as well as the first female
chairman of the Pardon and
Parole Board. Askins was a
state representative from
District 50 for a dozen years
earning the First Democratic
House Leader in 2005.
She serves on numerous
boards and chairs the
Oklahoma Tourism and
Recreation Commission.
She also serves as the
President of the State Senate
and Governor Henry’s Small
Business Advocate.
Askins was first asked to
visit Sapulpa in 1992 by Rick
Woolcry. She spoke Thursday
about tounsm in the state and
how the state parks are
improving to better serve
Oklahomans and tourist.
Askins gave examples of
Lake Texoma and a 750 mil-
lion dollar infusion in Marshall
County. She also spoke about
Lake Murray State Park, the
oldest state park, and the steps
it's been taken to improve.
Fountainhead Golf Course is
in the process of being pur-
chased by the Muscogee Creek
Nation.
The department spends near-
ly 5.8 million dollars a year on
advertising with an in-state
focus in the fall and a out-of-
state focus in the spring.
“We look at each state park
on an individual basis, not a
cookie-cutter approach," stated
Askins.
Chuck Mitchell closed out
the luncheon by announcing
the Kiwanis had the best atten-
dance on the day and won the
$250 prize.

at Freedom Elementary Thursday afternoon.

Not a single member of the Oklahoma State
Board of Education missed Thursday s regular meet-
ing held at Freedom Elementary
“Very rarely does the school board travel.' said
Shelly Hickman, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma
Department of Education.
State school board members were asked by State
Superintendent Sandy Garrett to attend the Sapulpa
meeting and she commended them for being there.
“I want them to see this school - how wonderful
it is - a great environment for learning for the chil-
dren.” Garrett said “We re thrilled to be here
Garrett, who took office in 1991. spoke highly of
Principal Nancy Turlington and how she was so
impressed with the school when she made a person-
al visit in May.
“It's the school team, and most definitely, the
school's leadership I knew Nancy when she was a
principal at Fort Gibson and she had a good school
then and she has one now. Garrett said.
Each board member represents a congressional
district in the state There are six members on the
board but the school was host to over 50 school offi-
cials from around the state and others for the event.
Garrett opened the meeting by introducing the
newest member of the state board and former
Oklahoma State Representative. Dr Barbara Staggs.
Muskogee. Staggs was appointed to the board by
Governor Brad Henry to replace Larry Adair and
was sworn to her position at the meeting in Sapulpa
Thursday .
Garrett then mtroduced Turlington as a principal
