Mory:
On Nov. 12, 1942. the
World War II naval Battle of
Guadalcanal began. (The
Allies ended up winning a
major victory over the
Japanese.)
Ten years ago: Ramzi
Yousef was convicted in
New Yotk of masterminding
the 1993 bombing of the
World Trade Center. Four
U.S. businessmen and a
Pakistani were killed by gun-
men in Karachi. Pakistan,

began in Sacramento, Calif-

Unabomber Theodore
Kaczynski.
Five years ago: In an
audiotaped message, a voice
purported to be that of
Osama bin Laden praised ter-
rorist strikes in Bali and
Moscow and threatened
Western nations over any
attack on Iraq. Former FBI

resigned under pressure as
head of a special accounting
oversight board created by
Congress to rebuild public
confidence shaken by a cas-
cade of business scandals.
One year ago: Hundreds
of relatives and friends of the
victims in the crash of
American Airlines Flight

lives, dedicated a much-
awaited memorial in N.Y.
Teachers sing praise of Jefferson Heights principal
Maconsonk: Walsh
worked hard to
merge two faculties
Ry ihiwiambert .
Herald Assistant Editor
According to faculty and staff at
Jefferson Heights Elementary, Principal
Tom Walsh has done much in the past
few years to help bring about positive
changes in the Sapulpa schools.
Walsh began with the Sapulpa
School District 18 years ago as a
Spanish teacher and bus driver at the
junior high school, where he stayed for
seven years before moving to the mid-
dle school as principal. Eventually he
served as principal at Liberty
Elementary before taking on the leader-
ship of elementary schools Jefferson
and South Heights.
During his position as principal for
both elementary schools, Walsh helped
in the detailing of the new school as it
was being built to combine the two ele-
mentary schools at a completely new
site. At that time, the Jefferson
Elementary building was almost 100
years old and South Heights was almost
70. The buildings needed upgrading.
which led to the building of the new site
behind Sapulpa's Wal-Mart.
As of January 2007, the students and
staff have been successfully merged,
and according to Tammy Maconsonk,
Jefferson Heights teacher, this success-
ful merging has much to do with the
man in the principal's office.
“The teachers are encouraged by a
principal who truly cares about his
teachers, staff and students,"
Maconsonk said.
She went on to list a few of his
attributes, including his "understanding
and appreciation of school culture, a
clear and inspiring vision of where
school is headed and a love for kids and
a concurrent ability to relate to them."
Maconsonk said Walsh has an abili-
ty and willingness to listen effectively
to both students and teachers, his abili-
ty to relate to teachers having been one
himself for so many years, as well as
the "ability to make and implement
effective decisions."
She also praised her boss for recog-
nizing that nobody is perfect, including
the principal — and that's okay.
“You can see how much he cares for
the students and teachers at this build-
ing,” Maconsonk said.
"Wherever he goes he’s smiling and
giving hugs and encouraging them (stu-
dents) with a positive attitude. He's got
heart."
Walsh received his college degree
from Oral Roberts University in 1991
and later his master's degree in school
administration from Northeastern State
University. In addition, he studied in
Spain at the University of Valencia in
1987, and is fluent in Spanish.
Dacia Walsh, Tom's wife, is a fifth
grade teacher at Washington School.
Together they have two sons, Isaac and
Caleb.
Nancy Toomey. art teacher for the
Sapulpa School District, said. "Mr.
Walsh is very hands-on. He interacts
with students in the classroom, on the
playground, and in the cafeteria.
She said the students at Jefferson
Heights Elementary love Mr. Walsh
“and they know that Mr. Walsh cares
about each and every one of them."
According to both Toomey and
Maconsonk. it is very common to see
Walsh on the floor playing with the kids
or out on the playground refereeing in
a game of soccer or some other play-
ground sport.
When asked how the teachers and
staff feel about Walsh. Maconsonk said.
‘Tom Walsh took these two faculties
from two buildings and has done so
much to put these two schools togeth-
er."
He worked with the school system
and the staff to make sure that every
staff member from both schixils would

have a position in the new combined
building.
"He is not just a principal who does
his job,” Maconsonk said. "He is total-
ly here for the kids and his stall.
She went on to say that "this is the
way everyone feels about him.

COLBERT
Justice Colbert, reminiscing
on Colbert's accomplish-
ments as a Sapulpa High
School Student in academics
and athletics.
Colbert expressed his grat-
itude to and respect for
Cockrum and former coach
Antoine Pryor.
"Mr. Cockrum treated us
all the same" with respect to
racial differences, Colbert
said, noting that Cockrum’s
stance was an exception dur-
ing the racially unsettled days
of the 1960s.'
Commenting on an indi-
vidual’s influence in history,
Colbert declared, "We cannot
escape history."
Using the illustration of a
photographer covering Dr.
Martin Luther King’s march-
es in Birmingham and Selma.
Ala., Colbert explained that
the photographer visited the
National Civil Rights
Museum in Memphis, Tenn.,
40 years later. Looking at the
statues of Rosa Parks and Dr.
King, he encountered a statue
of an anonymous photojour-
nalist illustrating the media's
influence in promoting civil
change. Standing before it.
this visitor realized that he
was looking at a statue of

DEAR ABBY: Please tell
people to hang up and drive!
This year, five girls who had
just graduated from high
school in a nearby town were
killed in a car crash. The
news media carried some sto-
ries on the investigation,
including the fact that the dri-
ver’s cell phone had sent and
received text messages while
the driver was passing a truck
seconds before the accident
occurred. There is no text

attention to the road.
Talking on a cell phone
while driving isn’t much safer
than texting because, unlike
someone sitting in the car
with you, the person on the
cell phone can’t see your dis-
tractions and will keep
demanding your attention as
you navigate with halt your
mind.
We’re all busy. We all need
to multitask at times. But pull
off the road to use your cell
phone, because nothing any-
one has to say or hear is
worth dying for. Please,
Abby. use your influence to
get people to hang up and
drive! » ROSEMARY IN
NEW YORK
DEAR ROSEMARY: I’ll
try. Readers, the Los Angeles
Times recently printed a pic-
ture taken on one of our
California highways of a
young woman who was not
only driving while texting,
but also had her left foot
hanging out of the side win-
dow of her vehicle. Needless
to say. with her eyes glued to
the screen of her cell phone,
she was not watching the
road.
I am truly sorry that five
young girls lost their lives
because of a driver doing
something similar. We hear
over and over again how dan-
gerous it is to drive with any-
one who is under the influ-
ence of alcohol or drugs. A
person who is texting is simi-
larly impaired. When, oh
when, will people finally get
the message?
DEAR ABBY: How do
you tell the owners of the
company I work for not to
bring their dogs to work?
These arc very big dogs
that bark at the clients when
they come in and have eaten
people’s lunches off their
desks. Last week, there was a
big to-do when the dogs ate
two co-workers’ lunches. One
of them became very upset.
The owners apologized and
promised the dogs would
"take a break" for a while. A
week later, they brought one
of the dogs back.
How do you get the own-
ers to understand that this is a
professional office, not a
mom-and-pop antique store,
where dogs do not belong? —
BARKING MAD IN OHIO
DEAR BARKING MAD:
Unless it’s reflected in their
accounts receivable, you
don’t. Any employee who
tries will only wind up in the
doghouse. Because you can
no longer tolerate the live-
stock. look lor a job in an
environment that is less ani-
mal friendly. Everyone will
he happier -- the owners, the
dogs and you.
