i'u kkb are a good many laud huy-
•n iu the city al present.
Till Press-Gazette commands all
the democrats to jump into iis wagoi
or be forever damned.
Hklict the best men for delegates
t< the city convention. They will
haw the shaping of the city ticket.
If the delegates are honest conserva-
tive men the ticket will -be a good
one. ~
I enjoy the general prosperity of my
country, and know that the working-
men of this land are the best paid,
the ls'Bt fed and the best clothed of
liny laborers on the face of the earth.
Many of them have home4 of their
own. They are surrouuded by nil
the comforts and many of the luxu-
ries of life.
I shudder, however, at the thought'
that the time must come when all
this will be changed, when the gener-
al prosperity of the country will be
destroyed, when the great body of
workingaien in this land, who are
i,ow so prosperous, will hear their
wives and children cry for bread ; that
the day must come when the great j
factories and manufactories of tlus
laud will shut down, and where there
is now life and activity there will be
the silence of the tomb.
And the reason why this must be
is this: The great southern wing of
the democratic party are determined
to establish the doctrine of free trade
in this land. They will be assinted
by their northern allies. There is a
great body of visionary, bntedmateu
men, who are employid day by day
in writing tree tiade essays ami
arguments in favor of tne doctrine,
which find their way to every news-
paper in this land. The great body
of our people have never experienced
themselves, the sufferings which al-
ways result when the protective prin-
ciples are laid aside.
Poisoned and exeited by the wild
statements of these writers and the
demagogic appeals of the democratic
speakers, the result will Ije that in
the very near future these forc< s
which are now working will lie
strong enough to defeat at the polls
the par.y advocating the doctrine of
protection. It. must inevitably follow
' hat uncertainty and doubt will ensue.
The business men of the country,
fearing the destruction of the prin-
ciples of protection, will decline to
engage in business, consequently
mills will shut down, and the work
ingmen will be thrown out of cm
ploy men t.
- TllOpeople vi\\ 1 then see as they
have never sr n before that they can
oat be prosperous and have work
while this principle is threatened.
Tn the midst of their sufferings they
will learn that the only way they con
be prosperous and happy is to vote
for the party that has built up the
industries by which they have gained
a livelihood: because they will then
see clearly that when the manufac-
tory is shut down there in no demand
for the only tiling which they huv
to sell, aud that is their labor.

Ami now it la Pitman that the
i'resB-Guettfl assaults. One hy one
the l'ress-Qn/.ette turns over on its
■pit the leading democrats of tlic
territory. The I'ress-tiazette wants
harmony, with all who are opposed to
its peculiar ideas left out.

that strictures are unnecessary and
superfluous from the Press-Gazette.
Whence1: .>e safely say to a long
suffering public—the I'rcss-Gazette
has become lucid or shows symptoms
of a bopeil for change from its con-
ilition of poipotual insanity.
Tiik First National bank slate
men! printed in this issue ia the best
ever made in the territory. It allows
a most healthy condition of the in-
stitution aud a marked improvement
of the financial situation iu this city.
No institution in the teriitory was
more sorely tried last summer thau
was tb« First National bank, but it
pasK,'(l tliroi gh the ordeal unharmed,
and tronger than ever. The general
(iiBinistof banks caused thousands
of dollars to be withdrawn from the
institution, but when the Hurry was
over the depositors began to return,
and now the deposits have reached
♦l ;i,OU0. That is not as much as
the hunk had prior to the panic, but
there is not so much money in the
country now as there was a year ago,
we believe the depoft'ts aro pro
portiooately larger than they aver
weu. The cash on hand now
amounts to {92,133, or a little more
than 60 per cent of the deposits,
while the United States law requires
but per cent. It is not often that
a bank'can show BO per cent of cash,
and in ordinary times the banks do
not care to hold so much money, but
until titues improve everybody who
has deposits in the bank will be
pleased to sec a good cash account
Hl.ilJiE'S PROPHECY.
Thu fact that James G. Blaine
pic. . ted the exact condition of
things now prevailing in this country
and .is accurately showed the causes
which would lead up to it, i3 now re
oiled. Head the werds of this
greatest of latter day American
statesmen, and see how clearly the
drift of events indicated to him the
evils that were to come:
