and carry out a plan for revitalization
focused on four areas: design, promo-
tion, organization/management and
economic development.
The program will include assisting
individual tenants and property
owners with physical improvements to
property through consultation with
design professionals.
The goals of the program arc the
following:
—Provide angle parking on Dewey as
part of a state approved plan for relief
from heavy commercial traffic in the
downtown area.
—Landscape and beautify existing
parking lots and to acquire and
construct additional public parking.
—Plan and develop the Creek County
Courthouse green.
—Provide an enhanced downtown
“streetscape” by rebuilding sidewalks,
providing new signage and area light-
ing and by establishing rules for build-
ing improvements that encourage a
revival of the downtown’s architectur-
al heritage.
Bridges said property owners will
need to meet certain requirements
when remodeling an older building.
They also will have assistance in
research to make sure the plans arc
compatible with preserving Sapulpa’s
building designs.
A membership drive is underway to
get business leaders and the communi-
ty involved in the project and revitaliz-
ing Sapulpa’s downtown.
Other present board members arc
Marlene Cather, Steve McCormick,
Lynn Rainwater, Mike Bczanson, Guy
Berry, Julie Warden, David Sheffel,
Ann Price and Eddie Bayouth.
Jet loses part of wing
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A
United Airlines jumbo jet bound for
San Francisco with 357 people
aboard returned to Manila Saturday
after a piece of one wing peeled off
over the Pacific Ocean.
The Boeing 747 landed safely at
Manila’s airport, and no serious inju-
ries were reported to the passengers
or 17 crewmembers of Flight 820.
Last month, the cargo door of a
United Boeing 747 blew off after the
craft left Honolulu, ripping a huge
hole in the side of the fuselage. Nine
people died when they were sucked
out of the hole.
In Saturday’s accident, passenger
Jonathan Miller of TorTancc, Calif.,
said the plane began to vibrate after a
10-by-3-foot hole appeared in the
right wing between the fuselage and
the nearest flaps.
“First, I felt a bump, then the plane
began vibrating,” said Miller, who
was seated near the wing. "I saw a
foot of the starboard wing peel off
and then other pieces followed. You
can clearly see through the hole.”
Rob Doughty, a United spokesman
in Chicago, said a 3-by-5-foot portion
of a fiberglass panel fell off the wing.
But he said there were other panels
beneath it and that the accident did
not leave a hole in the wing.
Doughty did not know how. high
the plane was flying when the acci-
dent occurred, but Miller, a 50-year-
old aircraft products engineer, said it
was probably about 35,000 feet above
the Pacific Ocean at the time.
Witnesses who saw the plane after
it returned to Ninoy Aquino Interna-
tional Airport said the tom portion
was just above the flaps near the
fuselage. Security forces kept repor-
ters away from the aircraft.
Rudy Flores, the airport’s supervis-
ing air traffic controller, said the crew
discovered a fiberglass section of the
wing had tom off about 30 minutes
after the plane took off from Manila.
Doughty said the Boeing 747-100
was delivered to United in 1970. He
refused to speculate on the cause of
the accident, but he said the age of the
plane probably played no role.
