Santa still loves job after all these years Christmas
services
scheduled
Bv MATTHEW BKOADDlS
Herald Manuring Editor
It’s not easy delivering thou-
sands of toys to every child
across the world, hut each year
Santa Claus manages to do just
that.
And while Claus won't say
how he does it. he will tell you it
is due to scientific breakthroughs
in travel and just a little
Christmas magic.
Saturday night Clause will
load his sleigh and head out on
his magical journey.
"I love my job.” he said
"There are very few people who
stay at one job as long as I have
and still love every minute of it.”
While Claus does remember
every little girl and boy on the
planet and whether they have
been naughty or nice he does-
n’t remember how long he has
been delivering toy s or even how
old he is.
"I'm old. But a healthy diet of
milk and cookies, eggnog and
Christmas candy keeps me
happy, healthy, lit. and trim." he
said with a laugh looking down
at Ins si/e.... well, the si/e ot his
belly isn't important.
Claus admitted he has had to
layoff the sweets a little bit.
"Chimneys are getting smaller
and a few years ago I got stuck
for about half an hour." he said.
"A dog started barking in the
house and the people woke up
thank goodness they thought I
was a raccoon in the chimney.
One peek up the Hue and I would
have been busted.”
Claus said he knows that peo-
ple don't always believe in him.
but is okay w ith that
"As long as people are kind to
their loved ones, generous to
those less fortunate than them
and willing to spread Christmas
cheer, they believe in the idea of
me. even if they don’t believe in
me." he said. "Besides. I'm not
the main locus of Christmas any-
way." Santa said with a wink.
Claus said he has no plans for
retiring.
"I don't seem to get older,
people keep making movies
about me and the legend just con-
tinues to grow." he said. "Shoot.
I'm more popular than that
"American Idol' show."

Students helping troops,
and Blue Star Mothers
Bv JOHN McCRACKKN
Herald Sniff Writer
The war in Iraq is on Britni
Conley’s mind every day.
"There are soldiers over there
dying for us to be safe over here."
she said.
Through her father. Conley has
an inside look on the war. Her
father is an independent contractor
in Iraq, working to rebuild the
country. He's told her of the chal-
lenges and sacrifices made by the
U.S. serv icemen and women.
"One day I was just driving
down the road listening to the
radio, when I heard about Blue
Star Mothers." Conley said. "They
said they needed donations."
She went to Roger Johnson, art
teacher at Sapulpa High School
They mobilized the art students to
collect items to give BSM for the
troops. That was 2(X)4. her senior
year.
This year she's at it again. As an
instructor at the art club. Conley
inspired the elementary students to
collect badly needed items again to
make their work easier and keep
up their morale.
"This year Roger Johnson sug-
gested that the art students could
opt to give donated items rather
than pay their tuition for
December," she said. "That
increased donations greatly."
Under Conley's leadership, the
children collected bags of request-
ed items from the BSM list. They
also wrote letters to the troops, and
bound the letters together into a
long chain, called a Patriotic
Holiday Spirit Chain.
The goods were added to the
regular BSM shipment going out
this month.
Conley said she felt the need to
help and thank the servicemen and
women, is greater than other caus-
es. She sees the Blue Star Mothers
as the best way to support the
troops.
"They show the pride and patri-
otism we all should be having."
she said. “Blue Star Mothers are
there to help."
"The purpose of Blue Star
Mothers is to let the troops know
that America is behind them, and
to remind Americans that freedom
isn't free." said Dee Dobson, a
BSM associate.
She said this is BSM Chapter
Id's first Christinas. Chapter 10
covers Sapulpa. Mounds,
Kellyville and Glenpool areas.
For the holiday season they set
a goal of 200 boxes to ship out.
Their stores were depleted fol-
lowing the hurricanes in the gulf. It
w as at the request of the troops that
their items be rerouted to the hurri-
cane victims.

Happy Birthday:
‘Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared.....the Lord's
glory surrounded them.... "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring
you good news of great joy for everyone! The Savior—yes,
the Messiah, the Lord-has been born tonight in Bethlehem,
the city of David!'
