AI.L SHOULD VOTE FOB WATER
WORKS.
At the election to be held
Tuesday, April 7, not a single
vote should be cast against the
water works proposition. The
voters of this city should be
unanimous in expressing their
sentiments for an improvement
of such vital iuterest to the
city. This will be the first im-
portant step for public im-
provements for Edmond and
an electric light plant should
be the next move. With a
water works system and an
electric light plaut in Edmond
and with the completion of the
interurban railway. Edmond
will be a city of 5,000 people in
a few years; provided, howev-
er, that the residents of this
city offer such inducements as
most people of this day and
age demand in the way of mod-
ern improvements. These Ed-
mond must have if she expects
to keep pace with other Okla-
homa cities.
Following the establishment
of a water works system and an
electric light plant, either to be
owned by the city or by pri-
vate interests, Edmond should
have a sewerage system. How-
ever, we cannot hope for this
for a few years. Nevertheless
these thiugs must come to Ed-
mond to insure growth and
prosperity. Furthermore, from
a sanitary standpoint water
works and sewerage are a ne-
cessity. There is no doubt
whatever, but much if uot all of
the typhoid is caused by con-
taminated water, flowing from
the surface of the ground down-
ward until it comes in cantact
with a ledge of rock, over
which it flows until it comes to
a well, into which it flows, car-
rying with it millions of dead-
ly germs. This will all be elim-
inatsd by the establishment of
a water works system, which
will furnish the people with
pure water. Couple this with a
sewerage system, to carry away
all contaminated surface water,
and you will have a healthful
condition.
BEAUTIFY EDMOND.
Now is the time for the peo-
ple of Edmond to begin to
beautify the city. Much is al-
ready being done, but a great
deal more can be accomplished.
Plaut more trees, clean up the
lawns, sow grass seed, plant
flowers, clean up the streets
and alleys aud assist nature in
making Edmond the most
beautiful city in Uklahoma.
Already much is being done,
but there is room for improve-
ment.
From now until next fall Ed-
mond wiii entertain many vis-
itors aud everything should be
done to create a good impres-
sion. John Anglea is setting
a splendid example, which oth-
ers should follow. He has
ploughed up the parking
around his place and sown the
ground to grass seed. A high
wire fence has been built from
the rear of the hou6e to the
alley, which will be covered
with vines an,] flowers, and
other beautiful blossoms will
adorn the premises. It is such
well-kept places as this that
add to the attractive appear-
adce of the city. Let others
•follow this good example.
The legislature at Guthrie
has stamped out prohibition.
It has done worse than this, it
has placed the state of Oklaho-
ma in the liquor business. The
people of Oklahoma voted to
free the state of the liquor
curse, yet their will has been
thwarted by the much boasted
advocates of prohibition.
