Sapulpan’s music career
an accidental skyrocket
By LORRIE J. QUINNELLY
Herald Staff Writer
For Sapulpan Scott McCoy, a career
in country music has come pretty
much by accident.
He confined his singing primarily
to the shower until a couple of college
dorm buddies entered him in a talent
show as a practical joke. The joke was
on his friends when McCoy won.
The win led to a regular gig in the
Ken Lantz Sports Arena (of Reba Mc-
Entire fame) outside Ada and some
clubs dates in the McAlester area.
When his wife, Tracy Good, sent a
demo to the Alabama June Jam com-
petition and he finished in the top 35
of 2,(XX) entries, McCoy decided it
was time to take his singing aspira-
tions a little more seriously.
“I didn't have a music background.
I always wanted to be a golfer,”
McCoy said. “I got a golf scholarship
in 1990 to East Central State (Univer-
sity).
“Golf still may come in handy. I’m
going to get to play in the (country
singer) Tracy Lawrence Golf Tourna-
ment this summer.”
Through the June Jam competition
and Dallas regional, McCoy’s music
caught the car of country radio station
KPLX, which began playing some of
his material. The management also
asked him to open for John Michael
Montgomery and George Strait at a
concert the station sponsored.
“We had to put a band together real
quick for that,” McCoy said. “I sure
couldn’t used tracks.”
McCoy, who still teaches a few golf
lessons, and the band - which in-
cludes Good as a background vocalist
- still play area clubs, and McCoy is
on the verge of releasing his first full-
length album
“I’ve been flying to Nashville once
a month since May,” said McCoy,
who is represented by Sound Enter-
tainment Management Co., who heard
him through a chance encounter with
his wife at a local printers. “We’re
putting together a 10-song album

Cut with some of country music's
top studio musicians, the album is a
showcase of McCoy's talent
“Wc’vc been putting down tracks
since November, and wi re still not
finished.” he said.
But McCoy, who has been the
opening act for Collin Ray, Chris
LaDoux and Marty Stuari. is aware of
the role chance and his wife has -
played in his career.
“Tracy really convinced me to pur
sue music,” he said. "She’s reallv
encouraged me.
“I’ve really lucked into this. It's
good timing."
