The Pioneer won first place in the
Bristow Invitational.
Don Holman also picked up a solid
win over a quality foe, pinning James

Sapulpa High School senior guard
Tina King ruled the court as her
25-point scoring spree and royal
defensive intensity guided the Chief-
tainettes to a 5947 victory over Ponca
City in Frontier Conference girls
basketball Tuesday.
The 5-5 sparkplug covered the SHS
gym floor like three players as she
burned the net for a trio of 3 pointers,
sank eight of nine shots at throw free
throw line, pulled down six rebounds
and managed five steals.
Teammates Lori Morrow (15
points) and Risha Grant (10) were also
crucial factors in No. 5 ranked Sapul-
pa’s 24-point turnaround on Larry
Rehl’s Lady Wildcats.
Ponca City had won by 12 points,
5.3 41, when both teams first met this
season on the l.ady Cats’ home court.
But Ponca City’s loss or senior
standout Jennifer Wells and the devas-
tating SHS defense gave the hosts just
the right ingredients to up the Lady
Chiefs’ overall record to 9-2 confer-
ence mark to 7-1.
Sapulpa still has the same number
of losses as league leader Bartlesville
but the Lady Bruins have one more
win at 8-1.
Ponca City, ranked No. 13 in 5A,
drops to 5-6 overall and 44 in
conference.
“Tina was locked in and ready to
play tonight. She played relaxed,”
SHS head coach Mike Barnes
commented. “She can do a lot of things
with the basketball.
\ “They played a triangle and-two
trying to take Lori and Risha out of the
game. That w as when Tina stepped up
and did well.”
The contest was anything but a
runaway for three quarters as both
team tied 13-13 by the close of the
opening period.
Outstanding overall play by Leigh
Ann Hoover and Morrow helped the
hosts take a 26-25 lead at halftime.
Both teams put on a 3 -point exhibi
lion midway through the third quarter

as Sherri McGuire, PC’s top scorer
with 11 points, nailed two treys to put
the Lady Cats ahead 35-30 with 3:26
to go in the period.
But King stole the ball four times
and hit two free throws to start a 9-0
run by the hosts which continued
through early in the fourth quarter.
Two buckets by Morrow and free
throws by Grant and Lonnie Breckcn-
ridge helped Sapulpa take a 37-35
edge by the clsoe of the third quarter.
Morrow’s field goal 25 seconds into
the final stanza pul SHS ahead 39-35.
King hit a pair of 3 pointers and two
bonus shots while Brcckcnridgc also
had a basket to help extend the SHS
advantage to 4940 with just over three
minutes to play.
The closest the Lady Cals could get
was 7, 51 44, with 2:15 remaining.
But Morrow hit both ends of a onc-
and one free throw situation and King
completed a pair of onc-and-oncs to
give Sapulpa the win going away.
Sapulpa smoked the free throw line
by making 19 of 23 attempts (82
percent) to help offset an 18 of 49 (36
percent) night from the field.
Grant, who was crowned Mid-
winter Sports Queen later in the even-
ing, hauled in eight rebounds while
Hoover had four rebounds, three
blocked shots and two steals.

Albert at 2:10 p.m. Thursday in the
