Response To
Goldwater Group
Termed 'Exciting'
WASHINGTON (UPFl - IV
public response to Barry M
Goldwater's month-old Free So-
ciety Association has been ' ex-
citing.'' according to the presi-
dent of the controversial con-
I servative organization.
He is Denison Kitchel. a Phoe-
nix, Ariz., attorney and long-
time Goldwater intimate who
directed the former Arizona
senalor's campaign for the
presidency last fall.
Goldwater christened the Free
Society Association at a news
conference June 17 and serves
as its honorary chairman, but
it is Kitchel who is the operat-
ing boss.
In a weekend interview.
Kitchel said that he and his
staff are concentrating on re-
cruiting members and prepar-
ing the publications the associ-
ation plans lo circulate among
them.
The society's annual dues
range from $5 for a regular in-
dividual membership to $590 for
sponsoring members and $1,900
"or more’’ for founding mem-
bers.
It was the high-priced mem-
berships which generated con-
troversy. Republican national
Chairman Ray C Bliss deplored
the formation of the net outfit
because he feared it would rain
away funds needed by the regu-
lar GOP organization
Goldwater and Kitchel both
said Bliss had no reason to wor-
ry. although Kitchel is thinking
in terms of an annual budget of
$2 million or more.
Kitchel said it was too early
to disclose the number of mem-
bers enlisted and (he amount of
money raised because the re-
cruiting drive had barely start-
ed He did say that the response
had been "exciting "
The association has invited
membership applications in ad-
vertisements placed in 19 news-
papers It also is using a direct
mail approach in a campaign
expected eventually to reach
509.099 people.
Those who write for informa-
tion are told the organization is
a “continuation of the effort to
restore the philosophy of indi-
vidual freedom under limited
government. . as the dominant
force in American politics.”

Corps privates tried to steal a
pair of jet bombers here Sun-
day for a freelance raid against
Hanoi, it was reported today.
Reliable sources said the two
Americans, both privates first)
class, stole flight suits and
walked boldly on to the Da
Nang air base flightline to)
climb aboard B57 bombers.
The incident happened about
1 am.
Flightline guards took little
notice because night missions
are frequently flown against
North Viet Nam from Da
Nang.
The guards became sus-
picious when one of the
Marines peered out of the cock-
pit and asked a sentry how to
start the twin jet engines.
Both Marines were arrested
but not before they damaged
the two planes by tamper-
ing with instrument panels and
pulling out electrical wiring.
The Marines were quoted as
saying they wanted to bomb
Hanoi because they felt the air
war against North Viet Nam
should be pushed harder.
Both men appeared to have
been drinking, sources report-
ed.
Official Marine spokesmen
declined to comment on the in-
cident.
