With one swing of his hat. Wil-
lie Mays broke up the National
League s greatest pitching duel in
30 years and all but broke War-
ren Spahn's heart.
May* accomplished his handi-]
work when he lined a home run
over the left field fence with one 1
out m the 16th inning Tuesday '
night to give Juan Marirhal and '
0»e San Francisco Giants a 1-0 j
victory over the Milwaukee I
Braves.
For 15 dramatic innings, the 42-
year-old Spahn called on all his
cunning and pitched on dead
even terms with the stronger and
harder-throwing 25-vear-old Mari-
chal, but Mays' 15th homer end-
ed the league's finest pitching duel
since Carl Hubbell of the Giants
went 18 innings to beat the St
Louis Cardinals. 1-0, exactly 30
years to the day.
Marichal scattered eight hits
and struck out 10 in pasting his
13th victory of the season and
his ninth in a row.
The defeat was doubly tough for
Spahn Not only did it snap his
personal f i v e • g a m e winning
streak and represent his fourth
loss against 11 victories, but it
also nullified a valiant 14th in-
ning effort in which he heroically
pi’ched himself out of a jam by
getting Ed Bailey on a fly ball
for the final out with the bases
full.
It was the Giants' only other

against the Milwaukee veteran,
who walked only one batter and
