Until New Pope
VATICAN CITY < UPI > — An
Interregnum will guide the Roman
Catholic Church in the interval
.between the death of Pope Pius
II and the election of his suc-
cessor by the Sacred College of
Cardinals
The College of Cardinals Is to
meet by Oct 27 to name a new
pipe, and nearly all of the 55
members not already in Rome
were expected here within a few
days for the solemn concalve
Three senior cardinals and a
camerlengo i chamberlain > handle
minor questions for the Roman
Catholic Church in the meantime,
but major problems must be set-
tled by the entire college
Pope Pius II never appointed
a camerlengo. and the general
congregation of cardinals were to
meet in the Vatican today to
elect one.
The triumvirate changes mem-
bership every three days after the
start of a conclave for the elec-
tion of a new pope In event one is j
not chosen within that period
The camerlengo is head of the
sacred college and Is in charge
of the administration of the church
on the death of a pope He as-
sembles the conclave and takes
charge of it until a new pope Ls
elected
In the absence of a camerlengo
It fell to Eugene Cardinal Tis-
serant. as dean of the Sacred
College of Cardinals, to call the
cardinals into session
Precise rules for what happens
during the vacant see on the
pontiffs death are laid down in
an apostolic constitution which
Pius II helped revise in 1945
They provide that the three
senior cardinals of each rank au- j
tomatically form a particular
congregation which handles ques-
tions ol minor Importance The
present heads are Cardinal Tls-
aortuil, 74, Freuch-boru deuu of
the Sacred College; Cardinal Jo-
seph Ernest Van Roey. 84. of Bel-
gium and Cardinal Nicola Canali.
84 of Italy.
The other members of the
Sacred College make up the gen-
eral congregation, which decides
affairs of major importance and
can overrule the triumvirate by
