SAPULPA (OKLA.) DAILY HEPALD
Young Son Of Cult Member
Body Found With Anti-Red s Arrest
Monday, September 21, 1964
JONESBORO, Ark flJPI) -
The body of a 6-year-old boy
wn recovered Sunday night
from a shallow grave on a se-
cluded farm where the leader
of a militant anti-Communist
cult was arrested Saturday.
The head of the cult, John
Robert (Jonny Bob) Harrell, 47,
of Louisville, 111., told police

ing league, why not join one or
form one this season. It's not
only the thing to do — it's worth
doing. Guy, Stoop and Norma.

the boy was the son of a cult
member, and drowned last
month in a 20-gallon garbage
pail.
He said he and the others on
the farm near Strawberry. Ark.,
did not report the death be-
cause he was a fugitive from
the federal government and
they did not want to attract at-
tention.
Harrell was wanted by the
federal government for harbor-
ing a Marine deserter. Harrell
and his followers barricaded
themselves inside his fortress-
like Illinois estate in 1961 with
100 rifles and dared the FBI to grave in a wooded area 300
try to take away the Marine I yards from the farmhouse.

Agents forced their way in-
side. Harrell later vanished and
has been missing for the last
18 months. During this time he
sent letters to United Press In-
ternational and two lawyers,
claiming to have been cap-
tured by the Communists. The
letters were turned over to the
FBI.
Harrell was found living on
the secluded farm, under the
name Joe Taylor, Saturday
night. With him were his wife,
five children, Mrs. Flora Alice
Rowan. 57. identified as his
housekeeper, and her daugh-
ters. Mrs. Dorothy Payne, 24.
and Linda Rowan, 17.
The boy whose body was dug
up last night was her son, Mrs
Payne said.
Arrest Strangers
Harrell was arrested because
neighbors said the group "act-
ed suspicious” and no one knew
anything about them.
Harrell’s son, Todd, 17, told
Lawrence County Sheriff Ken-
neth Guthrie about the body
while authorities questioned him
in an attempt to confirm the
relationship of the children
found on the farm to the adults

rell, and Mrs. Payne all signed
statements saying the body
was that of Larry Lee Payne,
Mrs. Payne's son. They said he
fell in a 20-gallon garbage pail
three-quarters full of water and
drowned on Aug. 15.
Harrell gave up without a
fight Saturday when police and
state troopers surrounded his
car as he drove up to the farm
house. Harrell, who was report-
ed to have made a fortune sell-
ing prefabricated mausoleums
and wore his hair in a page
boy bob, told officers there was
a barrel containing over $7,000
worth of silver dollars in the
farm house.

Maiden Flight For

Planned Today
PALMDALE. Calif. (UPI) -
America's revolutionary XB70
six-jet plane, forerunner of fu-
ture supersonic airliners that
will cross the nation in only 90
minutes, was scheduled to
make its long awaited maiden
flight today.
The controversial triple-sonic
ship, product of a year-long $1.5
billion trouble plagued develop-
ment program, was to sweep
skyward from Palmdale airport
on a brief baptismal test hop
to nearby Edwards Air Force
base.
Takeoff time was scheduled
for 7 a m. PDT (10 a m. PDT).
The sleek white ‘‘winged mis-
sile,” designed to fly 2,000 miles
an hour and to an altitude of
80,000 feet, was programmed to
go through a series of basic
maneuvers to test its radically
advanced design in flight.
Chief North American Avia-
tion test pilot A! White, 45, and
his co-pilot, Air Force Col Joe
Cotton, 42. said they hoped to
streak the huge experimental
delta-winged ship slightly past
the speed of sound, between 650-
700 miles an hour, if the XB70
flew as planned. They also in-
tended to climb to about half of
its planned maximum altitude.

The Oklahoma Pardon and Pa-
role Board today was sched-
uled to discuss the complicated
case of Billy Joe King—a bank
robber who turned down a pa-
role because he ‘ couldn't live”
under its terms.
King, a former Army rook,
is in military custody at Ft.
Leavenworth, Kan, under a
sentence of death for slaying
a Louisiana man during a
crosscountry spree that ended
in Oklahoma. The death sen-
tence was imposed by an Army
court martial.
The Pardon and Parole Board
was willing to let the Army
have King and went through
technicalities of granting him
leave of absence and approving
a parole But King refused the
parole. He said he “couldn’t
live” under its terms. A board
member said King wanted to
serve the Oklahoma sentence,
believing this would delay his
execution.
King's cross-country spree
ended with his arrest in Okla-
homa shortly after a bank in
Webbers Falls, Okla., was
robbed of about $2,700 in April.
1962 King pleaded guilty to the
state bank robbery charge and
was sentenced to 12 years in
prison.
