Pretty House Frocks
Ideal for Mother's Day
Give mom one or two—or even more—because the price
is very, very law1 And every one of Penney's Brentwood
fashions is a perfectly beautiful dress1 Flowery prints,
stripes, patterns—in nice, high count cottons All sizes
■ of any length and here is why are
I working only pan lime or are not
working at all because of plant slow-
downs and shutdown* Only recent-
ly the UAW—In order to ease its
financial position—was obliged to
cut salaries of some employees Al-
though so far as is known. Mr
Hein her has not yet backed down on
any of his l#S8 demands, I fore-
cast that tn the end he will feel ob-
liged to compromise and a strike
should be averted But if by chance
a strike should be called. I bel.eve
II it will be .1 short one.
WHAT THE WORKER* MAY GET
it Is Interesting to note that the |
SuppirtneoUry Unemployment Ben-1
1 efits plan now In force in the auto
Industry ‘ awl which the Union
| ->rks to expand—was originated by
management F'ordi and not bv la-
bor. I ?xpeel that benefits under
1 his SUB plan will be increased as
! a result of the present negotiations
Other so-called "fringe" benefits may
I also be increased, but only fraction-
ally
Provision for a wage increase of
the size asked for by labor now
seems impossible Perhaps manage-
ment ant labor will leach a satis-1
factory compromise on this Issue
Possibly th.s will take the form of a
sliding-scale increase or decrease s
tied up with sales volume or profits
I .A BOR-SAVING MAC H1NERY
In all this discussion c: negotia
tions between management and
workers in this vital industry, 1 am
afraid we are losing sight of one
important tact: Labor's fortunes are
still dependent on supply and de- I
mand In recent years, manage-
ment has shown more respect foi
the workingman and lUs place In
our eoenomy As a result there is!
usually less wrangling in labor rie-1
goliation than was the case somr
years back But management will not
I sit idly by forever and make con-
cession after concession to labor
| if labor does not do its part by
boosting productivity and upgrading
quality
Unwc.e acts by laboi unions tend
! to ctiflen 1 lie aiimule of manage
mem and lu ha* ten and increase de
mand for labor-saving devices. Auto-
mation will become moiv universal
during the next ten years. There
w.li be vast changes in our labor
situation during the next generation
or two, changes calling for a senes
of adjustments on the part of both
management and workers.
WHAT MANAGEMENT CAN IIO
Tlie agreements finally reached by
the UAW and the large auto com-
panies will undoubtedly have an
eventual impact on other industries
What can management do to protect
itself from the pitfalls that lie
aheid? First of all. It must do more
than s.mply give in to labor’s every
demand.
Management needs more Inten-
sive training in labor relations for
It will still be quite dependent on
labor even when automation be-
comes more widespread than it is
now If we are to avoid socialism in
this country, management must have
the capacity to look ahead and lead
labor on to mutually better things
Such negotiations however, must be
| earned on in a mutually Christian
Spirit and without either side using
Russian-type thretts 01 sharp man
euvers.
