Although he has announced himself
ready to outfit an ambulance train
and accompany it to the battle fields
of France as a driver, James E. White-
side, millionaire oil man, has claimed
deferred classification in the selective
service on two grounds, a dependent
family and his oil buisness.
The members of local board No. 2,
Muskogee, have classified Whiteside
in division 2-A under the heading of
"married man whose wife and children
are not mainly dependent upon him
for; suport."
Even should his industrial claim be
denied Whiteside will still be! in class
2-A and will not be subject to draft
until all men in class 1 have been put
under arms.

The only successful co-operative
wildcat test for oil is being con-
ducted by the little city of Yukon,
Okla. This community of energetic
farmers and townspeople are drilling
every day with a big rotary drill on
the Steele farm eight miles south-
west of town. The test has reached
the depth of 2410 feet and drilling
in bluish shale.
A showing of gas was encountered
at 2000 feet and Contractor Johnson
claims a good formation is now being
encountered. The test is located on
a small dome and claimed by geolo-
gists to have an eastern and south-
western dip. No red bedy have been
found since leaving the 1900 foot
level and to the surprise of the wise
one-; oil may be found at any time.
Anyhow this locality is getting a good
test. The only mistake the company
made, if it is a mistake, is the use of
a rotary rig on a wildcat well.
When a pipeline burst at a point
four miles southwest of Fredonia, re-
cently, the Prairie company lost about
5000 barrels of oil worth $10,000
About ten thousand barrels of oil ran
out of the line before the bmlc was
repaired, but only half of it was
"picked up." Five thousand barrels
ran into Fall river, near the pumping
staton of the Fredonia water works.
To prevent contamination of the
water, the oil was burned off tht river.
