Congressman Martin B.
Madden, of Iillinois.—To the
extent of the increase of Eu-
ropean shipments to this coun-
try American manufactures de
crease; .American mills close
to the extent that European
mills open; American work-
men are thrown out of em-
ployment to the extent that
European workmen are en-i
gaged in manufacturing pro-
ducts for this country's market
and so on, until every mill ana
every man in Europe is at
work, and every mill and ev-
ery man in this country is idle.
Tariff for revenue only is a
splendid theory, but a very
bad practice. The republican
party believes that a tariff
which protects American work
men is best for the American
people and when it is power
it passes what ;s known as a
protective tariff law. 1 hat
is, it compels Europeans to
pay a tax for goods landed in
American ports equal to the
difference between European
and American wages. In this
way the European is compell-
ed to deduct from lvs profit
the amount of the tariff on his
goods and thus he is prevent-
ed from selling them here in
i competition with American-
made goods. 1 his enables us
| to keep American mills and
i factories open and American
i men employed.
