During the month of June,
pellagra caused the death ot
sixteen persons in Oklahoma.
In June 1914. the number of
deaths were thirteen. State-
merits to the effect4? that pellu-
gra is increasing 'n Oklahoma
are of doubtful accuracy.
Commissioner of Health Jno.
W. Duke, at Guthrie, is of the
opinion that increasing study
of thi-; malady by physicians
throughout the State has resul-
ted in their reporting cases
more promptly. Pellagra is
found mostly in certain coun-
ties in Oklahoma, especially in
southern and southeastern
' counties.
The cause of pellagra is un-
known. It is confined to rural
communities and is not found
in the cities, either in the Lnit-
ed States or Europe. It is nei-
ther contagious nor 'nfectious,
and can not be transmitted by
, one person to another. Its at-
tacks may be periodic or may
become chronic. A character-
: istic symptom is a repulsive
eruption of the skin. The mal-
ady has been known in Europe
and especially in Italy, for con-
| siderably more than one hun-
dred years. The theory that
j pellagra is caused by eating
spoiled or rotten corn is advo-
cated by many European sci-
entists. while others take the
view that it is due to infection
by a disease-carrying insect.
In the final stages of pellagra,
the victim collapses physical-
ly and mentally, and frequent-
ly becomes 'nsane.
Health Commissioner Jno.
W. Duke is inclined to the be-
lief that it is a condition, not
a primary disease, arising
from a prolonged lack of hy-
tjenic living in unsanitary sur-
i roundings, a failure to eat
wholesome and nutritious food
; in proper qr^nt'ties—in other
words, the absence of a bal-
anced ration. He believes that
by right living it should be pos-
sible to drive pellagra from
Oklahoma. Scientists in the
United States are ''ndustrious-
ly trying to find a cause and a
cure for pellagra.

and August, State Commis-
sioner of Health, JohnW.Duke
sent from his department at

persons in different parts of
Oklahoma who were reported
by local health authorities to

The first four doses are for-
