Bryan (in 1900): "What r bmU a man mu * *o tr.at hit own party soi
gaer.er, at any rate he was bitterly
opposed to having her have anything
to do with young Fairbanks. How
ever the oppositition of |her parents
only increased the love Cornelia bad
'or young Fairbanks, they became en-
gaged and Cornelia informed the
judge that she intended to wed the
man of her choice. Of course there
was a soene then and the old judge
• wore she should not. An elopement
was therefore planned and neatly car-
ritd out, Steen, who was also a cub
lawyer at that time practicing with
Fairbanks, was called upon to assist?
which he did, and helped make a for.
eible (or sneaking) entry to the Cole
home and take therefrom Mi"* Corne-
lia. 8teen afterward signed up as a
witness to the weeding ceremony.
Af erward the Judge forgave the
wsyward couple and iu after yeari he
wi made to be exceedingly glad in-
deed that his daughter had disobeyed
him. Hteen has all along had quite a
,ull wi h Senator Fairbanks, and it is
saiJ that Steen's endorsement will go
further with him than any other man
in Oklahoma, If Steen was a Repub-
lican he could reoeive i-ome lucrative
appointment at Fairbank's bands, but
«s it ii all he can do is to endorse
some republican.
