Tlie re are sum- good sentences in die add re**. They may
*h„w some careful tool marks. Iml they sound well:
I layor ilk- policy of economy, ml lieeaus,- I wi*b to *ave

Fxonomy i* idealism in it* most practical form.
Parchment will fail, the -word will fail, it i* only the spiritual
nature of man than can Is- triumphant. .
A* sentence* those are pretty good example*, lint the U *| of
lh,-m all was m his itiliixlu--tiv>n, for the president wrote the his-
tory and meaning of the Civil War in iix<- words, "W.- marie
freedom a birthright."
Pul when we get away from the satisfaction of the president's
word carpentry and look at the speech in the large, it has |lu-
cirtue* and the inaptitude* of the farm milk Mutds of hi* youth.
It is simple, compact, well put together and within ’the compre-
hension of the humblest reaches of reason. But when it comes to
loftiness, it has distinct limitation*.
The president conies out neither a* isolationist nor an advocate
of "entanglement.” He i* still for the World Court and still
against the la-ague of Nations - although he manage* tile latter
declaration of position without naming any names. The country
owes obligation* to the world, hut for the world to rely upon our
living up to these obligations implies, apparently, „,m, *„ri of
derogation of our sovereignty. In other words oui obligation is
oars because we own up to it, and not lav au*e we owe it.
There is nothing new in tins outlining of the Coolidgc stand.
Indeed, there is nothing new, nothing of announcement or pro-
clamation. nothing of imitation or inspiration, in the entire ad-
dress -unless it be the intimation that obstreperous. Republicans
may hereafter expect curt and stem discipline from the White
House during the next four year*. Shrewdness, conscience, de-
ternunation, love of order and regularity, patriotism, repression
—J«e traits are plain on the face of the deliverance. And .f it
tow anything « more compelling and farsering character, that
mm* be because the man behind it is whst he is.
