Henry Ford appeared on the witness
stand Tuesday Tlie Jury has seen
ihis chief fiEure in the $1,000,000 ilbe
suit which he has brought against the
Chicago Tribune, as a manufacturer,
tt* a humanitarian, and M a patriot.
They have heard him both denounced
as au anarchist and praised for the
war work which he did for the gov-
ernment without profit.
But it was not until the Tribune
ceased its examination and Ford ooun
took the witness that this par-
ticularly human fact in the personal-
ity of Henry Ford was turned to trie
light. The only legislation ever
sought by this iu*n of millions, whose
Interests reaches every part of the
globe, has been legislation for the pro-
tection of birds. He had never sought
for special laws to protect or advance
his own Interests, he has never asked
for himself or hla vast holdings any
special enactments. But he has found
time and has had the Interest to love
to seek to protect birds.
It was a curious bit of testimony
and It left a deep Impression upon
the audience, for It contrasted Henry
Ford's attitude with that of number
less interests who 811 the state and
national capltols with tbetr lobbyists
seeking special privileges and legisla
tlva favors. The testimony developed
as a result of Alfred Lucking's ques
tiona concerning Mr. Ford's friends.
Counsel sought to dra .1 out the fact
that Mr. Ford had never affiliated with
anybody which waa in conflict with
the government, and that he had no
friends among such organisations. His
beat friends, he said, wore Thomas
Edison and John Burioughs
"Who is John Burioughs ?" asked
Mr. Lucking.
He is a writer and naturalist"
Are you interested in nature?"
'Yes; I like birds."
'Have you introduced a number of
new varieties to Amerloat"
"Tes."
"They come at your oaU, you know
them all?"

"None whatever."
The question the* turned to litiga-
tion In whloh Mr. Ford has been con

It developed that when his buetnees

found hla path bloaked by the
called Seldeu patent on internal corn

turers were paying tribute.

BUILD NOW!
"To increase the efficiency of labor, to increase production ao
that prices may be lowered." Business, from ditch rising to
banking, needs building as a stimulus at this time. Building
investments, if made with reasonable prudence, are enhanced
in value with the increase of population.
A universal building program means more to the United State#
right now than at any time in its history. It means individual
efficiency Tor labor: it means increased production in ail cor-
related industries; it means increased material demand* until
production reaches the quantity'production level necessary for
reducing unit costs; eventually, it mean* lower prices. This
country is the soundest, heiUthiest, wealthiest in the world. If
you need a home or a building do not hesitate a day longer in
going to work on it.
