SPEED TEST.
In a test of speed by the bat
tleships Missouri, Maine, Kear-
sarge, Kentucky, Iowa, Massa-
chusetts and the Alabama, the
Missouri was found to be the
most speedy, coining out seven
rr.ilos in the lead, distancing the
supposed swift Alabama, sixteen
miles. _____
Congressman Vic Murdock, of
Kansas, has become a hero by
saving the live* of a couple of
women at Ocean Park, near Los
Angeles, California. He was on
the beach and seeing they were
overcome in the surf, rushed to
their relief and rescued them
from a watery grave. Kansas is
always on time.
The British steamer, Ge'oreal-
enze, en-route to Kobe", Japan,
struck a mine off Port Arthur
and sunk immjdiately.
We recently had an interview
with Governor Ferguson, atGutn-
rie, in which he expressed a be
lief that there was a strong un-
dertow setting lr the direction of
the people and there was a refer
mation coming and a strong sen
timent against the trusts, and a
better life ahead, and freedom
from corporations and ring rule.
May this prediction be the truth.
Ia the ooarae of his addreBS at the
democratic) dollar dinner given at 8t,
Joaep'i, Mo.,' lait week, W. J. Bryan a«i I:
"To deny either the capacity of the peo-
ple for self g wermect or the righto' the
people to regulate their own affairs, and
t>dea' with all questions that concern
them is treaio-t to our theory of govern
m«ut and riiig treason is about to be re-
b ike 1 by a revival of faith in the people.
This tendeocy to restore to the people
their lost rights and fo pot, them in pof-
sassion of their own affairs is not going to
s op with the trust question. It will extend
to every issue. Wb n applied to the tariff
queat'o 1 It will put an end to the system
that has been in vogue for a quarter of a
century under w hich the nunufacturers
hava buen permitted to write the sched-
ules and determine the amount of the col-
lections tint they can take from the people
thr. iujh the op ra'ionsof high tariff laws.
The application of Ibis principle will
bring t igetlier the capitalist and the la-
borer bv legislation, which will give to
the laboring man the protection which he
hag ao long r eeded, and compel the re-
cognition of his rights a« superior t-.j the
claims of capital. It i? forty years since
Lincoln declared In one of his messages
that labor was prior to and more impor-
tant than eapit.al, a principle which has
sinc been so ofte Ignored. But the
conflict ba ween human rights and the
deman la if t ie organized wealth can only
he settled Inullv by a recognition of the
sup"ri iri'y of th claims of men over the
clalnn of monev."

There is ten and a half million
farmers in the United States. Bv
vott, they could carry some states
and some they could not. New
York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and it
would be a hard battle in Illinois.
The cities are very strong, but
much of the city vote would go
with the farmers. The merchants
would know which side of their
bread was buttered. They know
when the farmer is prosperous
that they are all right, but when
they are dead the merchant is too.
In fact, without the farmer, there
would be no prosperity to talk
about, the cars would cease to
run. If there was no cotton, no
wheat, corn, cattle or hogs to go
out, there would be no merchan-
dise to come in. Yes, the coun-
try would go back to the wigwam
but for the farmer.

As old as the age of man is the
worship of ideal deities. Such
has been the fact in Persia, in
Greece, in Rome, in Asia and
Scandinavia, Even the Moham-
medan pilgrims suffered much to
reach the coveted mecca. Even
the ancient Nile had its worship-
ers, as has the holy shrine at Jer-!
usalem. And even yet 200,0001
per year visit Gaudaloupe and the j
Basilica, in Mexico. While the;
ancient bun worshippers thatj
gave name to our Sun day, are no:
more, but still our native Indians'
go on pilgrimages to their annual
feast, and dance. Let them go as
they will, in time become a cant],
meeting and a revival of a better
life, even followers of the holy

they were tanked up with cloud

if Uncle Sath gets hold of them
they will always thereafter be
