No one wr made a mistake in buvinj the Succpss. It has every other plow on

izing the corncobs." I had to con
fess to an impression that corneous
couldn't amount to much which is
probably the opinion of the average
reader. IVut see how the corncob ac
tually piles up. Our corn crop in 191-
Vas 3lt;o(HM)Ot)0 bushels with an av-
erage of 14 pounds of cobs to each
bushel or more than 22 million tons
of cobs. This vast amount of product
taken from the soil in a single yr
and practically none of it returned.
A few. cobs it is true are made into
smoking pipes and a few are ground
up to mix iwith certain types of cattle
food which would otherwise be too
solid for easy digestion but the cobs
from one township would supply this
demand many times. It seems the
colts cannot be used for fertilizer un-
less they are split lengthwise for
if used tinsplit they last indefinitely
and fertilize about as much as so
many pieces of hickory wood of the
same size.
In thousands of shipping stations
throughout the entire corn belt the
elevator men are now burning these
22 million tons of cobs in order to
get them out of the way and to do
this are obliged to erect spi cial burn-
ers similar to those used in saw mills
to dispose of the waste trimmings
liefore ttie days of cas cooking rang-
es the kindling industry nas a thriv-
ing one but even for starting fires
cobs could not be shipped as the bulk
per ton makes the freight rates pro
hibitive.
r Ten tons Is about the minimum car-
I load rate lv.it ten tons of cobs would
J make a pile as big as a l.ous.-. Tho
! solution therefore must evldenily be
one which can be applied on the farm
a hire they grow which means each
fa nn 1 r mould shell his own corn.
This is no longer a difficulty as gas
engines are now a part of the equip-
ititlit of every np-to-date fanner. The
scheme would also have the advan-
tage of increasing the amount of ac-
tual corn hauled in any given load
to the extent of 14 pounds per bush-
el for it is the kernel and not the
cob for which the elevator man rays
and which is sold in the giain mar-
kets of the world.
What seems to be wanted is first
some practical use for the cobs on the
farm where they grow and then a
simple inexpensive process or ma-
chine for converting the cob Into a
condition suitable for this purpose.
It is an easy guess that were corn
grown 111 Europe which it Is not
they would long ago have discovered
a better method of disposing of 2-'
million tons of vegetable matter than
merely burning it up to get It out of
the way. The idea Is not unworthy
the generous endowment of a "foun-
dation' by somebody. H. II. Windsor

school social centers. ::
:: :: :: :: :: :: :: a :: ::
Three hundred and thirty-eight
schools in 1"1 cities of the Tinted
States were list d as social centers
during the past season. ;icrel'd!na
to a report compiled by Clarence Ar-
thur Perry for the Sage Foundation.
Officials of the I'nited States P.imau
of Kducation who have examined the
report declare that it is bound to
stiuyilate interest in this rapidly de-
veloping -phase of the movement for
'Wider use of the school plant.
Mr. Perry finds that in 41 of the
101 cities social centers were direct-
ed by paid workers. .New York has
48 such centers and Chicago l's
while Philadelphia Boston Columbus
Detroit Jersey City Ixmlsvllto Roch-
ester and Trenton are also among
the cities Included In this list. There
is iwlde variation in the length of the
season from five or six weeks in
some localities to the full school term
In others In fact little uniformity
prevails as to what constitutes a so-
cial center. 'Mr. Perry presents In
the report a tentative definition of a
social center as follows: "A com-
munity may be said to have a school
house social center if one of its school
buildings is thrown open to the pub-
lic on one or more fixed nights a
week for at least 12 meeks v vi ar
for activiths of a social recreational
or civic character regularly Greet-
ed by one or more trained lenders."
The report also presents data on
tho growing use of school buildings
for political meetings. In Cleve and
Ohio meetings were held in the
schools to discuss the new cons itu-
tional provisions that were 1 o ore the
people for adoption. In Jersey City
the public schools mere opened to
partisan political meetings with grat-
ifying results; eight public school
auditoriums in New York City were
also opened for the same purpose
and In Chicago the assembly halls
were employed for political rallies
and proved a distinctly popular in-
novation. Milwaukee Wis. and Wor-
cester Mass. are cities where the
sehorla have for some time he "11 used
for political meeting places.
The use of schools as polling pla-
ces is another recent development.
Thirty schools in Iis Angele:s were
used for this purpose in 1911. In the
past year Milwaukee began using the
