PRESBYTERIANS IN HIGH PLACE.
WMson Marshall Bryan Sulzer a:iJ
Ralston Ar All Membe's.
One of the u iexpected res'ilts
the presidential election was rel'en-
ed to yesterday by Hev. G W. Menu
secretary of the Dallas Council of
Churches. It is the fact that htt'.s
l!ie president-elect and vice pres!-d'i'it-ekic'
are members of th: ' res-
byti ri'.tn church.
"It has often happened" said Mr
lienn. "that either the president or
the vice presider t have 1 een mem-
bers of the Presbyterian church but
never before have both of these of-
ficers came from the tame commit
nlon. It is an interesting coinci-
dent that both President-elect. Wil-
son and Y.'i'liam Jennings Bryan his
chief supporter are elders in the
Presbyterian church both having
been elected by the congregations in
whi.'h they are members to the
highest office in the Presbyterian
fol.l. Furthermore the goernor-
elect ol the largest state in the
union. Congressman William Sulzer
of XewYork is a Prerbyterian be-
ing a member of the Madison Square
Presbyterian church of which Dr.
Parkhurst the famous civic reform-
er is pastor. The next governor of
Indiana Mr. Ralston is also an elder
of the Presbyterian church Of
course the Presbyterians are nat-
urally proud of these facts" said
Mr. Penn "as tehy have a right to
he."
"Hut the main thing and the one
to which genera! attention ought
tn be called" stid Mr. Penn "i.i
hat the men being chosen by the
citizens of the United Slates today
to the highest offices in the gift of
the people are Christian men and
men high in the "steem of their fel-
low church meiubers for their Chris-
tian character a:sd services. It is
j surely one of thf good signs of hte
i times that the American people are
! surely one of the good signs of th?
character to solve the important is-
sues that are before us today. It
t'nould give us encouragement also
that Dallas is so much in line wit.i
general American sentiment in this
particular. A leading young busines.s
man of this city remarked to me a
few days ago that where he was
brought up the general opinion
soemed to bo that only old men
nnd women ought to ho church mem-
bers but as soon as he came to Dal-
las he noticed that many of the men
of greatest reputation in the bus-
iness world were also men high in
the council of the churches. This
fact changed all his altitude to reli-
gion and all his life. It is a finj
old principle that the men who lead
j in our affairs both civil and reli-
j pious should be 'men who fear God
and hate covetousnest ' Dalla?
