MONEY AND NOTES UNEARTH-
ED BEHIND BOLTED DOORS
OF HERMIT'S DEN.
St. Petersburg Nov. 18 The au-
thorities of St. Petersbuig are en-
gaged In distributing $500000 which
has just been bequeathed to a num-
ber of churches and monasteries In
somewhat singular circumstances.
The number of religious establish-
ments that are to benefit by the
legacy Is said to be as many as
200 and as the will Is not a little
complicated In form tho proceedings
are likely to last some time.
The money was accumulated by
an old woman who had all the char-
acteristics of a personage In Dick-
ens or Balzac. Mine. Kolobova was
thought to have died a pauper ;uid
Indeed was buried as such but sib-
sequently it fell to the duty of ih.
police to search her rooms as there
was talk of a fabulous hoard said
to be hidden in the kitchen. At
first the police found small trace of
anv wealth beyond a quantity of
furs of some value irreparably cam-
aged by moths. For the rest the
rooms seemed to have served for
nothing better than a store houso
for old newspapers and for piles of
rag9.
Fairy Tale Comes True.
On beginning to make a clearance
however they Boon discovered what
they had thought was a fairy ta'o
was more than true. In almost ev-
ery nook and cranny they came
across packets all very tightly and
neatly bound up gome of which
contained bank notes and others
share certificates or title deeds while
in the piano an old and worthless
instrument they discovered quite a
number of rolls of gold. In conse-
quence of their discovery they de
cided to question the young servant
girl who nursed the old woman in
her last hours and ultimately with
the help of others who long ago had
had some acquaintance with the re-
cluse they were able to piece to
gether something of hi r history.
Ten or twelve year ago the re-
rluse had her sister 11 vl f s with her
and at that time although some-
thing of a "peculiar person." she
was by no means hermit-like in
her habita. Every Sunday she would
receive countless iirlcsts beggars
and Sisters of the Poor and would
have some money to give to each.
Since the death of her sister how
ever her door has been closed to all
strangers and only her servant and
her landlady ever set eyes on her.
It is said that during all this time
and for several years before she
made it a rule never to open the
windows. She prided herself that
rhe never washed and never paid
for heating purposes.
Heat trom Gas Lamp.
All the heat that she required she
got frcm the gas lami3 in her room
but in the winter rhe would some-
times move into the kitchen (expell-
ing her servant and placing her for
the time being In her own room de-
spite the cold) and these were the
only occasions on which the had a
fire in thp kitchen i.tt.ve
As a rule she prepared her food
herself with the r.id of a lamp placed
on the piano and 'n her very last
days she threw the unconsumed frag-1
ments into the piano case. Every
door was decorated with an assem-
blage of bolts and l;ars so that the
house was more like a prison than a
dwelling plae-j; but as-though these
precautions wer-. not enough the
miser had fixed ip a double merles
of alarm hells cn each door.
