CONTRAST II
BOY SCOUTS
AMERICAN BOYS SHOW GREAT-
ER SELF RELIANCE THAN
THEIR ENGLISH COUSINS.
A striking contrast between the
Hoy Scouts of America and the Brit-
ish IJoy Scouts is presented by
Samuel A. Moffat National Field
Scout Commissioner who has Just
returned from a trip to Kngland.
The qualities of resourcefulness
self-reliance and Initiative he points
out are possessed !n a high degree
by the American I'oy whereas lr
the English boy thoBe qualities are
lacking. The Tnglis!i boy pesseBS-
es courtesy and obedience he says
to a much greater degree and In
addition Is much more versatile lu
woodcraft and handicraft than are
tha'Amtrlcan lioys.
Moffat spent several -weeks mak-
ing a thorough study ot the scout
movement in Kngland. He visited
the camps attended troop meetings
spent some days at the. National
Headquarters in Iondon and got a
thorough iiiBlght in the workings of
the Iirltlsh Scout Movement

i "presents a striking contract to his; work. One troop which I visited had
! Kngiish cousin. Here our boys for a greater variety of articles for ex-
. hibitlon purposes than I have seen
the most part are of the sanguine .... . u .
brought together by all of the troops
'type. They are sMf-assertive are of Qf our A
possessed of initiative are resource;
fu! and quite telf-reliant. It Is ev
ident then that the emphasis of our
voik need not ha in developing
these traits. In fact I am not so
sure but what the task of our Scout
Masters has been tc check this ev-
Idenc of self-assurance in order l
give them the benefit of the expeii-
ence ann moiigni oi uuiers. i ne. e
Is grea need to developu In our buys
habits of couitesy respect to their
elders and a seiiBe of their place In
life.
"The Kngli!: boy is more of the
Bober-nilnded type. He needs to be
drawn out of his shell ai d develop
ed. He is reserved self-centered j
and ratr.er seir-aoasive in nis aui-1
tude toward life. He is quick to re
s pond to the bidding of a superior
but it In mechanical service that he
gives. Lacking in resourcefulness
he only carries cut the o'der to the
letter. If conditions are not as he
exjected the English boy will go
back and report -his Inability to ac-
complish the task. The American
boy when given an order will find
ways and means of executing it even
though conditions are not as he ex-
pected. There Is practically no need
of emphasizing the scout laws of
couitesy obedience and loyalty. As
before htated this is the Kngiish
boy's instinctive attitude toward
others.
"Another thing which interested
me was to observe how versatile the
Kngiish Boy Scouts were In making
articles of woodcraft. Many of the
troops have their own work shops
cl:her at their .Scout Headquarters
or In the attic or basement of their
scout master's home where they go
after school oi whenever they have

Norman Okla. Oct 19. Norman
high school football players came
back strong Friday In their game
with Ardmore and redeemed them
selves for their narrow defeat at the
hands of Chlckasha last Saturday by
telling up on a fast field a total
score of 67 to 0 against their oppon
ents. The Norman boys showed up
in fine" form and now have their
hearts set upon retaining the state
championship which seemed to he
slipping when Chickasha beat them.

Our Wealthiest Men.
A well-informed writer on financial
topics quotes as the best Informa-
tion obtainable on the subject an es
t'mate of the fortunes possessed by
nine of the very wealthy Americans
v.luch is perhaps as good an estimate
a-: can bo made.
At the head of the list is the name
of John D. Rockefeller undoubtedly
the richest man in the country and
cudited with the possession of $1-
f'00000000. Next conies Andrew Car-
negie with $500000000. J. P. Mor-
gan is rated at $300000000 and Wil-
liam Rockefeller George F. Baker
James B. Duke James Stillman Hen-
ry C. Frick and W. K. Vanderbilt
are said to have fortunes ranging
down from $250000000 to $150000000
in the order named.
What does $1000000000 or even
$150000000 mean? Assurance from
the fear of want of course and the
ability to obtain any comfort or lux-
ury that money can buy. But any man
or woman with far less than the
least sum named could be assured of
theS things. What advantage has
the man possessed of so many mill-
ions over the one having merely a
competency?
Much in the world of finance and
business but little for the pure en-
joyment of life. That can be had.
Indeed with no money at all under
certain favorable circumstances. And
great wealth brings cares even when
it is given away as Mr. Carnegie is
giving his tortune. To give wisely
is said to be more difficult than to
acquire. Merely taking care of the
new investments made necessary ty
an enormous fortune must be a large
task. The interest on $1000000000
at five per cent is $50000000 a year;
on $150000000 It Is $7500009 a year.
No man or family can spend sucn an
Income. The greater part of it must
go back into the financing of the
world's enterprises or given away.
