CONFEDERATE REUNION.
Forty betJi years ago the remnant
oi Lee's army laid down their arms
at Appomatox. Forty-seven years
io this (spring a handful of ragged
Larefoot gray-clad figures stacked
their muskets and turned sadly away
Irom the stars and bars that through
sunshine and showers had floated
over the destinies of a trouble-bom
titorm-Bwept and at last battle-kill
td nation. Forty-seven years ago a
mere shattered remnant of what had
owe been the flower of southern chiv-
alry answered for the last time the
drum's call to arms and with tear-
dimmed eyes watched the southern
irons fade forever from view as their
flag was lowered to the (superior
numbers of the armies iroin the
north. Forty-seven years ago this
little band of heroes relizing that
further resistance was futile hawed
to the inevitable and bid a last fare-
well to the fond hopes that for lour
long and blood-stained years had
kept them In the battle's front-
hopes for the day would come that
would see their dreams of the Con fed
erate Slates of America a reality.
Shattered now those hopes and those
dreams swept away. Nothing left or
the tenix'st-hoin nation save a path
way of blood strewn with the torn
and mangled bodies of the fathers and
sous of tlie land of flowers and chivalry'-
Nothing left of the broad plan-
tations whose sweeping fields had
been the pride of their own country
and the talk of all others save hoiiBe-
li'KH chimneys and briar and weed-
grown wastes housel(rts chimneys
which stand today as monuments
marking ihe line of Sherman's march

tory of devastation and rapine and
war upon women and children that

(them up even after the cause to
which they had sworn allegiance had
become a forlorn hope these low re-
maining followers of Lee returned to
their devastated homes and began
anew the battle of life. How well
they have succeeded is evidenced by
the wealth and prosperity of the
new south today.
And now the few remaining ones
of that hand that were driven bad
step by step until their flag went
down in a blaze of glory will meet in
a grand reunion in Macon. The few-
scattered remnants of the survivors
of Appomatox surrender will gather
perhaps for the last time to many of
them and again live over the days
and scenes of the sixties. Shoulders
long stooM'il with age will straighten
and eyes now growing; dim will flash
with the fire of youth as theee re-
maining few hoar again the drum's
beat or the silvery notes of the
bugle's call. Steps that lag with the
weariness of advancing years will
again spuing with elasticity of youth
as they gaze upon familiar scenes
and live over in memory the battles
of a half century ago.
In but a few short years at most j
these reunions will be but history.
The relentless revolutions of the
cycles of time are depleting the
numbers and decimating the ranks
of the followers of tho southern cross
until the scattered few who now re-
main will soon spread their own
tents at the silent "bivouac of the
dead." Hut they may sink into their
final repose as did those who died
midst shot and shell that they will
not be forgotten for their children's
children's children will spread for
yearp to come the flowers of a lov-
ing memory upon their graves and
hallow with their hearts' devotion
their ashes the ashes of glor".

EDITOR-JUSTICE OF PEACE.
Gets Drunk Arrested Fined in Own
Court Pays Penalty Re-Arrested.
Seminol Okla. May 2 H. W.
Hoffman editor of a weekly news-
paper here will be the cause of At-
torney General West passing on a
dense legal knot. Hoffman is a jus-
tice of the peace as well as an editor.
There are two other Justices of the
peace in Seminole. l?usiuess compe
tition among the three Is keen.
Hoffman recently became inebria
ted He knew his contemporaries
would he looking for him so he had
one of his constables open his own
court where he arraigned himself as-
sessed a fine of $25 with thirty days
at hard work. The next morning he
joined a jail gang and put in the day
working on the roads near Seminole.
Tlie next morning however he pa-
roled himself under good behavior
and paid tlie fine.
Thursday a constable from another
justice's office appeared with a war-
rant for Hoffman for the same ol-
fense for which he claims he had an-
swered. A request has been made
for Attorney General West to deter-
mine if Hoffman was in jeopardy
when in liis own court.
The Earning Capacity of a Dollar.
Hanks may break and railroad
slocks depreciate in value; the
weaiher may affect crop conditions
and sway thereby the money market
to an unhealthy inflation or cause
a shrinkage to a point several de-
grees below zero. One such shrink-
age alone would carry to destruction
thousands upon thousands of invest-
ors of all degree from the one op-
erating upon 'change with bis mil-
lions to he who plays a few dollars
on ihe curb or through the tickers
in the bucket shops.
Dollars were made tp- supply o'jr
daily wants and to earn more dol-
lars. The earning capacity of a
dollar is only limited by the judg-
ment used by Its owner in investing
it. The man who uses good sound
horse sense in seeking a place for
tlie investment of his "nest egs"
may after that sit in the shade and
watch his surplus grow and Ihe orig-
inal dollars multiply in a Tiealtbv
ratio.
No investment is safe unless It Is
guarded by a good ano non-sbriuk-ahle
security. Real estate is the one
thing which always nas and always
will lie an absolutely gilt edged se-
curity. Manufactories may burn and
strikes and other lubor troubles put
railways out of commission and de-
moralize their securities in the fi-
nancial world but real estate always
remains the same. Its market price
like Tennyson's brook "goes on for-
ever" just the same. -
Anyone who would like to plac
their money or any part of it in a
sound and secure proposition would
do well to see V. A. Edwards sec-
retary of the i'eoples uullding and
Loan Association.
