the former delay in transaction of
local business.
The plan also laces the superin-

more responsible position than hereto-

questions that formerly had to be
taken through a circuitous route of
red tape to higher officials before ac-

delegated to a cleak and the agent

claims for his company in the district
Immediately adjacent to his office.
He will retain supervision over the;

The Senator Told Where He Stood

the U. S. Senate a Jury and Told

Davis Okla. Jan. 1. Lulled Slates
Senator Robert I.. Owen arrived here
Saturday on his holiday trip over the
stale. He was met at the depot b
a group of friends headed b the ma el-
and was taken over the city and met
nearly every eilien in the town. He
left Saturday night in spi nil Sunday
in Norman and doubled Pack today to
speak at 1'auls Valley and W.uine-
wood. Saturday night be addressed
the people of Mavis at the city hall.
A slow rain was falling and freezing
I as it fell. A stiff north wind blew
j i In cold rain into the face.- of the
! pedestrians but despite these unfavor-
able circumstances a large crowd greet-
ed the senator anil heard his speech lie
!was intrdo-.iced by C::pt. Allen who
said he was among the greatest ex-
ponents of political reform in the I'ui-
ted Stall's and that be had done more
in one term in tin I'llitcd Slates sen-
ale than any other man had accom-
plished in the .. anie leiiutli of time.
Senator Owen talked chielly In a
coiivei sal ional tone the close atl-n-
tion of every bearer was quickly
gotten and was held throughout 'ibe
s eh of two and a half hours. The
senator sai oil bad h"i n tour years
since he entered the public seni'-e.

demanding removal of restrictions
and equably of opportunity. The
first demand he had been successful

one man could accomplish it. no

it meant years of eilncalional work.

: equality of opport unity had to be ai-
jgucd beTore the I'niicd States senate
as a jury that it became necessary
! to change the complexion of Hi"
'jury before great headway could be
! made in tin way of reform. The

Maine. Senator Lodge asked for th" j

speaker wrote a reply to that speech

printed copies. All these copies were I
sent to Maine and when the election
was held the people voted for them-
selves and as a resu'i Senator Hale
was defeated and two democratic
L enators will come from that stale.
That was one step in changing the
1 complexion of the jury before whom
I the
senator is pleading the cause of
the people. Again when the repub-
lican machine wanted to bestow
statehood upon Nrv Mexico and
leave out Arizona he took the floor

Moved. Senator Owen wanted Ari-
zona admitted at the same time New
Mexico was admitted. He talked
popular rights for eleven hours and
until victory was his. Arizona comes
into the union with two democratic
senators and New Mexico comes with
two progressive republicans and again
a change is made in the complexion
of I he jury. The needed reform can
not be reached in the next congress
but in 19111 the xoplt will have a
sufficient number of votes in both
houses of the federal congress to ob-
tain equality of oportunity.
Senator Owen said when one indi-
vidual lives in a marble palace and
another works from dawn to dark
and cannot get anything ahead there
is something wrong. The people
made it his duty to discover the
wrong and obtain a remedy. It was
j a gigantic task but it is gradually
being accomplished.

' The .-eiiaior went in.'o ;i discussion ;
lot' the manner in which prices of col-
Ion ami wheat ami cattle are con
trolled and said if the trusts were
not allowed to pay mow than six per
lent dividend thai the chsire for il-
legitimate gain would he removed and
prod a. is would sell for fair prices
ami profits witld he equally distrib-
uted. The only time the senator referred
to those opposed lo him was when he
made the statement that it was heing
told on him thai he was a multi-
millionaire ami not in . ympathy with
tin people. The senator said the
upon was untrue that his mother
was born in a log cabin that the
house he was reared in and the lot
with it sold for $701' that he had
ridden on horseback after cattle from
one end of this country to the other
and that he was not a rich man and
that he had been reared among the
people he was representing in tin-
senate and that he was spending not
only his salary but a portion of hi-
income in attempt to change the jury-
before whom he was pleading the
cause of the people.
Senator Owen made many friends
among the Davis people he found
many friends when he arrived here
there were many who expressed thp
opinion that it would be a national
calamity to refuse to send him back
to the senate and when the prima-
ries are held next August It Is cer
tain that Davis and Murray county
will be in the Owen column.
