BE PROSECUTED FOR FAILURE
TO KEEP CHILDREN IN SCHOOL.
That parents and guardians iu Car-
ter county who violate the terms of
tin; compulsory school law will be
prosecuti! and made to pay tines is
the intention of the county attorney
and the county superintendent. The
superintendent is now sending out to
touchers and to the school boards the
mot complete list of blanks that any
county in tins stato In furnishing
and one of the features of the pres-
ent school year will be tho enforce-
ment of tin.! compulsory school law.
While children will be required to
attend the appreciation of the super
intendent and teacher will Ik? shown
In merit cards which will bo given
each pupil who attends one month
without mlsi-ing n day and three of
these merit cards out It lew! the pupil
to a much larger and a very pretty
attendance certificate that looks well
enough to bo framed.

CLERK OF COUNTY COURT.
Some days ago one o the news-
papers at Muskogee took the office
of state examiner and inspector to
task concerning- a letter of ln.-i.ruc-tions
sent out by the office to the
clerk of the coiuily court at No-
wata. The stato inspector's office
in making reply to the inmiiry of
he county clerk merely quoted the
statutes and made no comment ex-
cept that tbe witnesses described in
the letter were to receive pay and
none ol her.-. The limitation marks
in tile letter indicate tin; portion iliat
was taen liodily from tbe statute-.

Dear Sir: lU-plying to your in-
quiry: "What state's witnesses the
county shall pay and is liable for?"
1 desire to say that the county is lia-
ble for witness foes when attending
county court iu the following cases
and none other:
"In all ca-ses wherein a defendant
is charged with a felony or misde-
meanor and said deiciidant. is unable.
