providing a means for the direct
elect Ion of senators he closed his
spcei 11 by referring to Speaker Champ
Clark as the next' president. The
storm of applause rose from floor
and galleries from both sides of the
house while Speaker Clark red and
embarrassed vaiKly iionnded for or-
der. Again and again the hubbub
rose until the congressmen tired
themselves out.
Put it Is a dull day when some
i member in the nurse of his re
marks does not nominate Clark for
the presidency.
And Clark say nothing. He is
sawing wood working with might
and main to make good in the speak-
ership. He says: "The democrats
elected me to the most responsible
position they had to give and my
duty is here helping'the democratic
house to make good and I am not
going to neglect my duty in order
to igo gallivanting around the coun-
try seeking another office."
Clark has not uttered a word or
turned over hrs hand to bring about
his present prominence in the presi-
dential race. So far as ran be learn-
ed he has never 'broached the sub-
ject fo anyone yet the fact remains
that lie is leading both Wilson and
Harmon in many states while re-
ports from hundreds of sources in-
dicate that he has some following in
ever noolc and corner of the country
the result of his being on the firing
line for thirty-odd years fighting his
patty's tbattles. no matter who might
he the nominee.
The Washington Times states that
'the democratic members of congress
jare for Clark for a two-thirds or
throe-fourth majority with the re-
i malnder divided between Harmon
and Wilson. Clark is second choice
with nearly all of these last. That is
a formidable showing to start with
as each member in almost every case
controls the selection of two dele-
gales from his own congressional
district.
In a short time the pressure on
Mr. Cla-k will become so strong that
he will almost be forced to allow his
partisans to begin organizing in his
behalf whereupon shrewd politicians
about the capltol look for the Clark
boom to literally sweep the count ry.
So far there is not ven a Cark press
bureau but the Clark sentiment
grows daily based on these facts.
Clark comes from the closest state
in the union a state carried 'by
Roosevelt and again in 190S by Taft
by r.:13 voies out of 730(100 cast. He
i acceptable to both the Itryan and
Hearst wings because of the purity
of his record covering seventeen
years in congress. Tie is the only
candidate prominently mentioned who
did not holt the ticket in 1S9.1. While
acceptable to Itryan and Hearst his
clear headed conservative record as
sneaker o:' 'the "best acting" congresj
in recent years has gained him the
complete confidence of the solid hon-
est business men of tITe country.
Cleveland wrecked his party by
re.isoi. of the fact mat he did no!
know bow to work in harmony with
congress. Clark's supporters call at-
tention in the fact that he has dem-
onstrated that he can work in perfect
accord with his party in congress
while to select a president without
experieino of this lind would be try-
ing a-ain the same exerienco.
