The annual May class will be intro-
duced to Elkdom this year with the
usual splendor that is attendant upon
these meetings. About sixteen no-
vices; -Rill assemble here on the 21ird
of the month. They will roam in from
Marietta Sulphur Milburn Madil:
and probably other towns will be rep-
resented before the roll Is closed. Ard
more w ill also have its usual quota of
new members.
The local Elks have already begun
to make preparations. Elks milk.
which was planned to have been
served was destroyed en route here
from Alaska. The train went into the
ditch near Yellow Stone National ; ark
and wi'h the destruction of the train
some of the fun of the Elks was de
stroyed. But not discouraged the lo
cals went to work to provide other
and better things. When the weary
novices arrive they will find a gen
erous sunidv of hay on hands. Stalls
will be garnished servants wili be or. (
hands to polish the an'lers that will;
lie applied in addition to the gener !
ous supply of hay which will he ship-
ped from the native land of the Elk.
there will be plenty of fine clear soft
city water to dampen the special
food which will be enjoyed.
Cine of the difficulties of the occa-
sion this year is that the mountains
are h inner than ever before and there
will be d-fficv.lt climbing. Then too
the wilderness is more weird and lone-
some the guides are new and fresh
and may lie able to lead the novices
through in safety. Great anxiety is
felt and to keep down the danger to
the minimum such men as WaPer
Dean and A. C. Cruce of Oklahoma
City are being urged to come and
Rabbit Sanders of Dallas has prom-
ised to be here with hts 1UM of ex-
perience. Should these fellows who
are old in the work arrive in time to
take ;art in the trip along the moun-
tain gorges the locals will he relieved
of a grea responsibility. Tlans have
been made to furnish ice water for
drinking and for bathing when the
novices reach the desert Their faces
will !.e shaved with biackfmith's tones
and the lather will be made of water
from the Dead Sea and Oriental
soap.
Sheriff Garrett will have his b st
deputies stationed at ail the gates of
the city and the frightened novices
who might be inclined to shirk the
trip throiuh the gorges will le placed;
in irons immediately upon their ar-
rival and will be held in captivity un-
til the antlers are ready to be ap-
plied. Each new Elk will bear the Ard-
more brand a mark of distinction
that he shall always remember and by
which hi own identity can ever af-
terward be determined. Special efforts
will be made to disfigure none Ttut
the lodge hereby absolve itself from
any responsibility.
