Tills action involves thousands of
acres of fertile land scattered through
ten or more counties In southern Ok

STATE BOARD
OF E
NEW ADMINISTRATION COMMIT-
TED TO REFORMS SCHOOLS ON
BUSINESS BASIS.
Oklahoma City Okla. April 10.
Oklahoma's newly created state board
of education appointed by Gov. Lee
Cruce Saturday under an act of the
last legislature possesses the most
sweeping powers of any state hoard
heretofore organized and will be
step in working out certain educa
tional reforms to which the new ad
ministration in committed.
In addition to Bchool managemen
contemplated In the act the board
probably holds power to abolish or
combine state educational institutions
for failure on their part to provide
a teaching force or managing organ
zation for any of them the said in
stitutlon would of necessity quit bus!
ness. legislative ratification would
not lie essential should the educational
hoard take such step and the admin
istration would he free to carry out
its hitherto announced policy of re
trenehment In that section of the state
government.
Briefly put the schools will be re
duced to a business basis compatible
with a high grade educational sy
tern.
A very salient feature of the new
board's authority is to bring about
centralization of school work that Is
confining each institution to ita fune
tion by removing conflict or lapping
of courses of study so that the Institu
tlons may particularize and thus
reach the highest standard of proficl
ency In a given line. It means keep
ing the higher educational Institution
free of lower grade work. Tersons
desiring an agricultural education
would be required to attend the school
carrying that specialty likewise for
instance the study of law would be
confined to the law school and a high
school education would have to be at-
tained at a high school in place of
a normal institute.
As expressed during the legislatlv
session if one wanted a shoe mended
he would have to go to a cobbler and
not a jeweler. The general Idea car
ried out educators say funishes the
strongest system and will eventuate

That Tt-aa a lively scene at Car-

of the day. The teacners and pupils
Just had to give vent to tihelr feel-
ings in appreciation of the victo-
ries won In the college meet at Du-
rant Friday and Saturday. All those
who won victories were lined up on
the stage. A 6ong was sung a song
of victory a few college yells were
indulged in and Profs. Hodges and
Mead could scarcely contain them
selves so elated were they over their
triumphs at Durant.
Jn the line of victors were George
Anderson discus thrower; Philip
Neilson who won In the 'hurdle
Claud N'eilson 100 yard dash; .Jo
Frank Williams of the 440 yard
dash; Walter Pittman of the high
jump; Miller Vernor winner in the
tennis singles; Orator Paul Frame
and Miss Annie Thomson who
won in music. Then there was an
other accorded a place in the line
of the victors. Supt. Evans told the
class that while they had gone to
Durant that George Barnes the lit-
tle fellow of' the Third grade had
stayed at "home and won in the
selling match with the county.
"Peace has its victories no less re-
nowned than war" said Supt. Evans
and George Barnes won a great vic
tory In the pursuits of peace. Tho
young fellow was iheartity cheered.
Each person was called upon to
give a talk In relating how he won.
Tlhat was an Interstins portion of
the exercises. "How could I keep
from winning" was the verdict
"with fifty Ardmore boosters with
their badges and flags rooting In
the grand stand and with the teach-
ers Hodges and 'Mead ust faltlv ha-
ting the ground in the high places."
They jumped farther and ran bet
ter and threw better and played bet-
ter and eommanded more oratory
because Hie spirit of the fiygh School
was virtually lifted from Its Ard-
more habitat and Implanted in Du-
rant. They had to win and they did
it. Victory wa3 expected of them
and they brought it ihome.
This was a great morning in the
life of the city school.
