POPULAR YOUNG NEWSPAPER MAN GIVES SOUND REASONS FOR
HIS WITHDRAWAL FROM THE RACE HARMONY BEFORE PER-
SONAL AMBITION.
"I understand that you have Bled
your resignation as a candidate for
the office of mayor of the city of Ard-
niore with the county election board
Is this a fact?" Was the question
propounded to Harry O. Johnston by a
representative of the Ardniorelte this
morning.
In reply he stated: "I have had un-
der consideration for the past several
days my withdrawal from the race for
the office of mayor of the city of Ard-
more and you may tell the many read-
ers of The Ardniorelte that it is a
fact that I have requested the county
election 'board to omit my name from
the primary ticket to be voted next
Tuesday. In determining to withdraw
I have good reasons for the action that
I have taken. First and foremoBt 1
consider that the vital interests of
. Ardmore and all her people hinge on
the outcome and center around the
niayorality contest. I have chosen
Ardmore as my home and expect to
live here as long as the good people
will permit me. I love Ardmore and
I love her big-hearted and progressive
citizenship and I would not be a par-
ty to the act of Impeding the progress
of the city or the contentment and
welfare of her people. I want to do
everything within my power to pre-
vent the widening of the breach be-
tween her citizens and the creation of
factions because no city can gro
and develop where the people do not

stand in complete harmony and work
together for the general good. 1 real
ize and have for several days past
that the contest for the office of nmyor
has culminated in a personal fight
between the two remaining candidates
in the race which would result In the
elimination of a third man for the of
fice.
"Ardmore at this time is upon the
tfcreshhold of the greatest develop
ment in Its history and It is the duty
of the people to throw aside all per-
sonal differences all petty and imag
inary grievances and to center on the
man who is the broadest minded who
has done the most for Ardmore In the
past who has never shirked his duty
when the call for help was sounded
but who has neglected his own affairs
day in and day out to lend his ener
gies to the material davaneement of
the city and the development of the
vast natural resources lying at our
door.
"I want to see the people of Ard-
more lay aside all prejudices and elect
the man who has done these things
for Ardmore and whom they know
will always be In the harness and
working to this one end in the future.
If is human to err all men are prone
to make mistakes but many times
these errors could be avoided if the
general citizenship of the city would
give their moral help and encourage-
ment to those men intimated with the
administration of the municipality's
affair. I have not indulged in any
mud slinging in attempting to con
vince the people that I was the logical
and the hest man for the office to:
which I aspired and I want to tell you
that the man who will resort to this
method to further his political am-
bition is not fit to preside at the head
of a community. I am deeply touch-
ed at the Interest which has been
shown my candidacy by all the people
of Ardmore regardless of their sta-
tion and I appreciate and take this
opportunity to thank them one and
all for the support given me."
"Are you going to take an active
part in the interest of any of the re-
maining candidates in this race for
the office of mayor?" was asked Mr.
Johnston. In reply he stated: "When
I announced for the office of mayor I
did so as a democrat I made my cam-j
paign mis iar as u uemui-ui mu imujuuu m ocu un u uio m-ci.
I remained in tne race I expected to
be elected toy democratic votes
without making any entangling alH-
ances with other parties thereby
wresting the control of this city's af-
fairs from the democratic party which
rightfully Is irt the majority. Now
my attitude in connection with the re
maining days of the campaign can
easily be figured from what I have

said and I believe that I have ex-
pressed the sentiment of an over-
whelming majority of the voters of
the city of Ardmore.
"I have been accused of being the
candidate of this man and that man
in the interest of one and against the
Interest of another; and it has even
been circulated that I was the Ard-
niorelte's candidate. My withdrawal Is
an absolute refutation of these scur-

Is unnecessary."
