Hundred May Have Become Victims
of the Fierce Flames.
DETROIT, MICH.: Dispatches from
Alpena indicate that the number of
deaths in the forest fires of Presque
Isle and Alpena conntles, Michigan,
will surely exceed fifty and may run
well tip toward 100. In the vicinity
of Metz, Bolton and Pozen the fires
have burned sufficiently to leave sev-
eral hundred women and children
^umplng with comparative safety in
the open fields, but near the city of
AlpeDa the fires were so threatening
that Mayor McKnight called out a
volunteer force of several hundred
men with shovels to form a patrol
and construct trenches to stem tne
progress of the flames in the direc-
tion of the city.
It Is estimated that 2:1 persons lost
their lives in the destruction of the
ill-fated Metz relief train on Thurs-
i day evening.
It is doubtful If the names of

Gold Bearing Quartz
MCALESTER: E. C. Mitchell, a
prospector, who has been at work in
the Kiamichi mountans for several
weeks, was in the city with a num-
ber of samples of ore which, accord-
ing to his statement, assays $25 in
gold to the ton. Mr. Mitchell claims
that he has foud a well defined vein
of the ore three feet in width run-
ning along ihe mountain. The ore is
white quartz containing small yellow
specks of precious metal which he
claims to be the real stuff. He also
found in small qualities ou the beds
of several of the mountain streams
black sand carrying Hour gold. How-
ever, he says that mining would not
pay as the gold is too tine and there
is not enough black sand. The moun-
tains are full of prospectors and some
hate found a great quantity of silver
and lead ore.
