preservation of order and the protec-
tion of life and property.
Such a state of affairs bodes ill for
the country, and it must be looked upon
with sorrow and regret by every citizen
who does not sympathise with crime
and anarchy. The workingman who
is sincerely desirous of bettering his
own condition and that of his fellows,
will regret it most of all. He will re-
gret it on account of the wanton dis-
truction of capital which gives employ-
ment to labor, and because the men
who are wrecking the mines are at the
same time wrecking their own hopes
and inflicting a terrible wrong upon
the cause of labor in general. So long
as the striking miners were law abiding
they commanded the sympathy of
everyone who understood the condi-
tions under which they worked and
lived. The moment, however, that
they resorted to violence against the
property of their former employers and
began an assault and maim men who
were exercising their inherent right to
work, they placed themselves in the
wrong, and there was but one right
thing to do. The safety of the public
requires that lawlessness shall be rep-
ressed with a stern and unyielding hand
and that the rights of the individual
shall be maintained.
In all the accounts of violence, one
fact stands out prominently. The
rioters, with scarcely an exception, are
foreigners. Many of them are even un-
able to speak the English language.
These are the men whom the mine
owners, high j.ntectionist, have im-
ported for the purpose of cheapening
labor and binding their American
workingmen in the closer bonds of
slavery. That which they intended as
a means of oppression, has now become
their own scourage. The lawlessness
must be put down in the interests of
society and property, but no sympathy
will be wasted upon those who are pri-
marily responsible fur the outbreak.

If all the property of the world was
divided up equally and all debt wiped
out, it wouldn't be six months until a
large number of the people would be
be in debt again, while others would
be accumulating property. The his-
tory of mankind nhows, that those who
manage well/ those who save their
earnings, those who can plan and look
ahead and those who are diligent, are
the ones who must prosper. On the
other hand, those who dissipate and
neglect the opportunities, must in the
very nature of things be left behind in
the race. "Seest thou a man diligent
in business? lie shall stand before
Kings." That is, he shall prove of
importance in the world. It was so
two thousand years ago, and it is so
to-day.' All these modern schemes to
insure exactly the same amount ot
prosperity to each and every individ-
ual must fail so long as there are dif-
ferences in men. If not, then there
would be no incentive to industry, no
reward for intelligence, no encourage-
ment for honest effort and no advan-
tage for energy and pluck. Such a
state of affairs would stille all progress
and soon return the world to a state
of indolence and barbarism.—Ryan
